My Police Story

Had you been walking through my old neighborhood in Flushing Queens, you most definitely would have been arrested. I have noticed that the Officers in Manhattan don't just blindly arrest anyone with the tell-tale clip showing.

One way to stay legal is to have your jacket cover the otherwise exposed clip at the top of your pants. In hotter weather, something like a long, light vest does the same.

Where are you in Flushing Monocrom? I "open carried" a folder clipped to my pocket in NYC daily for 5 yrs (between Briarwood, Queens & midtown/lower Manhattan) & nary a peep from the contabulatory.

I spent most of my life in NYC and never liked to advertise what I was carrying ... except for my battered old knobtop ash cane ... :)

I carried IWB most of the time, about 2:00 o'clock, clip over the waistband but under the belt. Not visible. Nobody's business but my own. No hassles, although the law wasn't as intrusive in those days.

I never had trouble carrying via pocket clip in NYC, though an untucket T-shirt may have covered things up more often than not.

I think the Axis lock is an example of technology outpacing the laws, as is assisted opening. Unfortunately, Axis seems like a non-switchblade that gets caught in the legalese, while assisted openers are much more "switchblade-like" but get by on a technicality.

The gravity knife laws bug me - good design and construction makes the blade easy to open, so lots of good knives could fall afoul of the law on this standard.

I'm still confused by the portion I quoted on page one, does an Axis lock fall in that category for PA law?

I'm not a lawyer so I cannot say, but ... the law is one thing, what the average policeman in that jurisdiction will do may be another. You need to follow the law, but you also nee to know what rules-of-thumb to avoid as well.

Of course, if you are within your rights, go ahead and give a lawyer a year of your pay to fight it out in court. :p

I suppose...

The only way someone will ever see my knife is if I randomly get searched for no reason. My shirts cover my pockets and they'll never catch a clip sticking out or anything, and I don't walk around using the knife in public.

I used to live about 3 miles from main street. Attended Flushing High School after it was somewhat cleaned up. I sometimes took the 7 train into Mahattan.

Things were different a few years ago. The LEOs in my old neighborhood cared about doing their job properly. Sadly, I feel as though that is no longer the case. :(
