My potential new hiking buddy

My dog was that small when we first met. Now he's over 10 years old and 80 lbs. He's definately my best hiking buddy. You and your pup have many years of hiking to look forward to.

I am hoping it all works out. I live over 200 miles from the buddy who had the poor critter dumped on him and work isn't giving me a break to get down there.

Well...this all fell through. My buddy's mom watched the dog for a few days and fell in love...ah well...they are animal nuts, so it's in a good home

Sorry this fell through for you. :(

But, ah, there are a lot of other pups in shelters out there that could use a loving home and a good buddy.

I'm just sayin' ;):thumbup::cool:

Don't worry, I'll still be getting one. I don't have much in the way of hiking partners since the ex and I parted ways. I liked hiking with dogs better anyway. :D I anticipate having one in a few weeks at the latest.

Start your pup with a small dogpack with ziplocks full of crumpled newspaper so he gets used to the volume/width. Later it will save many pack field repairs from snapped buckles and torn seams.
As he gets bigger start putting a waterbottle on each side and slowly make them bigger.
Keep the weight under 10% of bodyweight until he is 9 months to a year.
My 11 year old lab Spot still carries 10 to 15lb, he used to carry 25lb....once for 17 days.
Dogs on the trail rule!

Wow, I don't know how I missed this thread. Cute little pup. Good job taking him and not letting him go to a shelter. We need more people like you in this world. I hope you have many years of fun with the little fellow.

He looks a lot like my pup. Mine is a pit/coon hound mix. Dont let the reputation of the pit fool you, they are awesome companions. Good on you, bro. :thumbup::thumbup:

Second that. The reason pit bulls have a bad rap is that the people who are drawn to owning them are usually bad owners or owners who want a "mean dog." Socialize and exercise it and it will turn out fine. Cute as a button too.:D

Well...this one didn't work out, so I am still looking. I am searching for a rescue of some sort and I am not totally particular on breed, but I have some preferences: Pit, Boxer, German Shepherd, Rhodesian Ridgeback, White Lab, Blue Heeler, Akita Inu, Malinois...These are all great dogs, from what I have heard/experienced and most of them are apparently great trailwise. I do not care if it's a mutt, I have actually realized that most rescue pups are. So...I have a few questions about the breeds listed;

1. For those who own/owned any of these breeds, what are your opinions on them as trail partners? I know some dogs are less favorable for that environment and I want one that will be on the trail with me.

2. Are there any other medium-large breeds to look into?

3. What do those of you do for water when you bring the dog? Simply let them drink what is flowing? We had a thread about dogs being susceptible to giardia. Or do you bring along/purify water like you would your own?

Thanks!

I just came into this dog yesterday:

People were throwing rocks at him and hitting him with sticks. My wife and I have been disinfecting the wound over his eye. Hes all tore up, but thats the worst wound he has. So far this dog has been awesome just following us around, and hanging out. I took him on a walk down to the Yellow River here in GA today and so far hes a pretty good hiking buddy. They can come from anywhere dude, just keep an eye out.

Poor dog. I just wish the pricks that do that kind of crap would get punished. Good on ya for picking him up...:thumbup:

Everyone is say'n pit mix, but I'm not seeing it. Maybe it's the angle of the picture. More pictures might help. As for me, I don't think I'd care. I love all dogs (mostly.)

He looks like a great dog and looks like he lucked into a great home. Good on you for helping him out.

Cerberus.

Here's our Shelter dog. When I picked him out at the pound they told me to be careful because he was a mix of Pit, Shepherd, and God knows what else.
One things for sure, you don't want to make any aggressive moves towards the kids.
Best dog I've ever had is this mutt.
