My problem with sprint runs

I have no problem with collectable sprint runs.

What I do have a problem with is when a set of useful features only comes together in a limited run, like FFG on a G10 Manix 2, or a fine edge taking(and keeping) steel on a Para 2. Note that I like S30V for general utility, but I also like steels that don't get "toothy" with use for some tasks too.

Basically, I'd like there to be a regular production FFG G10 Manix2 or Para 2 in a steel like 154CM, CPM154, Elmax, or even Sandvik 13c26.

But, as long as the sprints have different colored/material handles(or other cosmetic differences) so they can be easily identified as collectible, please bring the useful features from the sprints down to us mortals who like to be able to buy a replacement for our knife if it breaks or gets stolen/lost. Ultra premium steel in sprints is fine too, I understand that.

I used to feel compelled to get most of the sprints with exotic steels. I no longer do. I'd rather have variety in my collection than multiples of the same model with different steels.

I always was buying some sprint runs as well as some regular production. Of cause sprint are taking priority, because some of them have tendency to disappear. Some production knives I bought few years after they came out.
This year will be a little different for me. Per plan, almost all of my knife purchases will be sprints, exclusives and limited. Lately I found myself liking Military much more than before (CF/M390), I like Para2 a lot (cannot miss my favorite colors like orange and green, two of each), Dodo is coming, I hope to get Ti Fluted Native + The forum knife. This will be enough to put me in poor house, still need to find some funds.

I guess it is a little unhealthy to make jokes about addiction or 12-step programs for Spydieholics.

But seriously, man! I gotta have just one more Para2 exclusive! ...and a couple of Mules...and the new Bradley Air...and the ZDP Manbug...and...and...and...

I would definitely like to see some sprints in something other than the super steels.. A para2 in VG-10 would rock.. Alot of people would prolly complain though as it would cost as much or more than the normal s30v version.. too bad..
I haven't started getting into sprints at all yet.. I'm kinda scared.. lol

I have kind of given up trying to keep up with all the sprint runs. I have 24=25 spydercos with many of them being sprint runs, the rest being the more desirable suspended production knives. I do have the obligatory endura in zdp which I use alot. I will pick up the sprint runs that I find interesting, but don't try and buy them all just for the sake of buying. That being said, I really wish I had picked up one of the paras in carpenter20 and also the 390 military. I will, however enjoy my s90's, the m4's, my BG42 military, etc. Love those Spydercos!!!!!

I've purchased a few Sprints in the past thinking that I'm going to use them and not get into the safe queen thing, but then the aftermarket price on some of them goes through the roof! Then comes the dilemma in that it becomes extremely hard for me to use a knife that now commands several hundred dollars on the open market. I'm very curious about what will happen with the new orange Dodo.

I just don't like using knives that are hard to replace. Like I said, I'm fine with the sprint runs looking unique or having super premium steels. However, I think the useful feature combinations should be back-ported to production models more quickly.

Basically, if a 154CM FFG G10 Manix 2 and an Elmax Para 2 were standard production items, that would shut me up about this :D You can replace either of those steels with a fine-edge keeping steel, all the way down to a Sandvik razor blade steel, if you like, and I'd still be happy.

I like the way you put this, I should follow this!

My first Spyderco is on its way to me and its a sprint run and I'm going to use the hell outta it, no safe queens here.

I used to collect a few things from fountain pens to watches, it got to the point where I had cardboard boxes full of the stuff sat in cupboards. Over 400 fountain pens and 10+ nice watches.

I came to the realisation that I was preserving these items and getting no enjoyment from them, who was I preserving them for? certainly not me as I had no use of them other then the occasional fondle!

My attitude now - I purchase items for myself to be used, I will enjoy them, not someone else. I will add character to them in wear & tear, they will age with me and then go to someone else with the added wabi of my lifetime.
