I have a 4-month-old Brittany Spaniel, Bobby Sox. I was walking her out in the desert. It was getting pretty dark when Bobby Sox ran under and through a HUGE bush. As she came out the other side I heard the buzzing of the rattlesnake. I thought, "Whew! That was close!" because Bobby Sox didn't yelp, pause, or anything as she ran into, through and out the other side of the bush. But about 10 seconds later she started whimpering and limping. I didn't go back to see the size, or even type of rattlesnake she was bitten by because I knew she would follow me over there and may get bitten again. After 20 minutes or so she was really dazed, not wanting to move, and her leg was swelling a lot. (She was bitten on the front left elbow.) She spent the night at the vet, and should be ready to come home today, along with a VERY large bill.

That sucks dude.Keep us updated.

I just called the vet. She is alert this morning, but still has pain and swelling in the leg. She should be fine, and hopefully a little wiser toward creepy, crawly reptiles.

PS, I like your location description. I had to plagerize it for my own. :barf:

Glad you were able to get to a vet quickly and that she is OK. I bet she had a tough night.

The black lab below got nailed in his face by a water moccasin when he was younger. He got a little upset at the snake and tore it to pieces before I could calm him down and get him to the emergency vet. He is not a very violent dog, but to this day will go after snakes with a vengeance.

I live by a saying one of my sergeants used to say:

"Every snake is a cobra, every spider is a black widow."

Pretty self-explanatory but in a nutshell it means if it's a snake you avoid/kill it no matter what it is and same with spiders.

Sorry to hear about your pup but I'm so glad you are the type to take them to emergency care asap. I know many people who would wait until the next morning to take their dog in (and have a dead dog). Prayers for your pup and thanks to you for being a wonderful pet owner.

Glad to hear she's gonna be OK. We worry about our BC all the time while out hiking. We did get her the vaccination but I think it's only good for the Western Diamondback, and it is not guaranteed to work!!

I was reading a little about the vaccination. I guess it is 2 shots, one month apart, and then a booster every year. Do you know what the costs are?

The shots were $16.00 ea. from our vet, amazing that anything medical can be that inexpensive!!

Wow! Sure beats $1200 for an emergency weekend call, antibiotocs and antivenin. I might have to start milking snakes for a living. ;)

PS Nice Collie or Sheltie. I can't tell scale in the picture. :)

my brothers lab got hit in the side of face by a rattler. very serious [2400$] had to lavage with salt h2o for several weeks as a huge amount of tissue sloughed out. the u.s. has several kinds of rattlers--eastern diamondback most venmous with western diamond #2.

It's great to see that she is going to be ok. I grew up with a Brit and she was my best friend for many years.

So glad to hear she's ok! Coincidentally we thought we'd lost our retriever today, but all is well in the end. I love that dog as I'm sure you love yours. Thank heavens for a good outcome today:thumbup:
