My quest for the perfect EDC

I kinda like that I've never been fully satisfied with my quest for the "perfect" EDC, I only carry Spyderco knives factory wise, I do have two handmade knives I like, but "perfect"?. My current EDC is an Endura FRN SE, though I would prefer hollow ground, an adjustable pivot pin and serrations all the way to the very end of the tip, I also like the old integral clip, more handle purchase imho. I EDC a Dodo SE for work and in that application it is as close to perfect as I will get, I work as a Veterinary Nurse, so the toughest things I have to cut are Etubes and the occasional cardboard box. I got a disco'ed Blue FRN Rescue Jr. two days ago and I'm very impressed with the handle design (especially the choil), now throw in a Endura shaped SE blade, maybe. the best thing is that next year we will see some new designs so perhaps next year will be the year, can't wait to see the Endura/Delica redesign, I'll live with the saber flat grind if I have too :( , if I can get a adjustable pivot!

Cheers,
Rob

Thanks Slatts. You are correct. I did get some from you. It has been great fun playing with them and then moving on. I know I'm just fooling myself on the 'perfect knife' thing. Like I'd stop buying knives if I did find it.

Anyway, I look forward to my new Centefonte. The jury is still out on the FRN body. There may be another upgrade in the future if it strikes my fancy to do it. Then again it may just suit me fine as is. Time will tell.

Thanks again guys.

This conversation has basically been limited to folders.....

You're forgeting something, the SPOT. My first decent knife was an Endura and that and a later Delica are probably the most carried knives in my collection. A few months ago i acquired two SPOTs and since then I NEVER leave home without one. I may change my carry folder from time to time, but i always take a SPOT with me. The upcoming "Swick" (Spot 2) also looks to be promising.

"Mostly" agree with you STR, with some notable exceptions.

Spyderco Q is also one of those knives that intrigue, rather than frighten, the "Non Knife People". A decent used one can still be found occasionally for thirty bucks or so.

Delica- do hope the upcoming mods add a choil and address some of the other issues you mention.

Para-Mil- yep, plus not overly lefty friendly.

Manix - Chinook - agreed, but mostly because I'm a city dweller, great knives for someone who works outdoors, in a rural setting.

Dodo- Know someone who considers it the ultimate "high end box cutter", not my cuppa, old arthritic fingers and ball lock don't play well together.

Calypso Jr.- One of the greats, thats for sure!

Catcherman- Your observations are true, but considering it's only meant to be a folding fillet knife, not really surpising that it makes a poor general purpose blade.

Viele 2- Impressed me at first due to its quality. But it's really too right handed for me, and the "something for everyone" look of the multi material handle gets old fast.

Salt1- My favorite Salt, "out of the box" is the Atlantic. Your mods on the Salt 1 turn it into an extremely nice knife.

Native- I like the feel, wish they'd loose the swedge grind as it provides nothing of value and seems to equate to WEAPON!!! in a lot of folks minds.

Two others I like very much are the Stretch, which I have a hunch, given your talent, you will turn into a real eye popper once you get one, and the Persian. Both push my "size limit" for an EDC to the max, and the Persian pushes my weight limit a bit too, but they both feel great in the hand and are a joy to use. Have a hunch the new R2 will be another of that ilk.

2 Spyders that right away I consider near perfect for carry are the Rookie and the Massad Ayoob. OK I know some of you guys may disagree with me but consider the fact that in the Spyderco line there are very few knives that could be categorized that way. Some of your older Jess Horns could qualify. Now if blade size was not an obstacle I would go with the CE S30V Military. The C-44 big DYAD is my personal EDC. You definitely have the very best of both worlds with that blade. :)

JD,

I agree with you about the Massad Ayoob. As a pure CARRY knife, I think the Ayoob is hard to beat. I prefer IWB carry, and because of its low profile, unique curvature, smooth scales, and amazing slimness, the Ayoob sits about as incospicuously on my person as a Calypso Jr. (which I also love). The same features also make it a great pocket knife, assuming one has a deep enough pocket. There are knives I find more ergonomic to hold (e.g., Dodo, Yojimbo -- though the Ayoob is no dog to handle by any means), but when it comes time to pack a knife to go out, I find myself reaching for the Ayoob more than any other.

This doesn't mean I'll stop looking for a replacement though... ;)

p.s. Can't comment on the Rookie since I don't have one...
