Agreed. As stated, this is quick, dirty, and oversimplified. A general rule of thumb (heh, did it again).

The thumb studs work too, but at the cost of tactile feedback and cosmetic wear.

I can only take the firs 45 seconds. Man, that is cringe-worthy.

I tried the OP's method. My thumb is too big. And no amount of adjusting marks could get it close to where I want the angle to be.

It's taking something that should be very specific and making it vague. The knife would be useless to anyone other than the person who put the edge on it.

This gets, a better than using a bench grinder rating. Just having fun.
I'm sure its effective as a handy stand in for actual sharpening.

It only took me wearing off my finger pads a few times to reasscess my techniques.
