I always use a large blade like the 9 for chopping and batonning and a small knife like the 16 for carving and feather sticks. An axe makes chopping easier but I think is a bit overkill for fun day hikes or overnights. And batonning a small knife cross grain on hard wood is a real pain. Soft wood is tolerable as you stated. Give it another chance.

Personally, I agree with what IA Woodsman said in his Turley knives videos. A small blade with a full size handle can do anything. Admittedly, I love my BK9, and my BK2 for that matter, but I don't mind the weight, haven't had any issues with technique, and have loads of oak and other hard woods to deal with. Maybe if I move to EAST Texas, where it's mostly pine, I might change my mind. The BK9 has other advantages over the 16 though, like REACH.
You are more than welcome to reach deep into a mesquite tree, my friend, and get rid of all the thorns yourself. I prefer to just chop the limb off and never reach in there with that 16. Btw, I do have a BK16, and I love it, but there are chores that I prefer my 9 for.

Alright! I've reconsidered. Believe it or not, I've never had a folding saw! All the wood processing I have ever done has been with a large blade, obviously I don't want to chop through more then 4'' of seasoned wood with a knife! I'm going to pick up a silky pocket boy. Thanks for counseling my insanity!

Also, might be a good idea to stop hitting yourself with sharp objects. And don't shoot yourself either, since I think you mentioned your parents made the mistake of giving you a gun. ;)

I actually have more scares from doing rabbit 4-H then knives. :D Admittedly, they weren't head wounds but........... also that 'hawk bite was the worst scratch I've ever had, google "knife cut", adults have worse "accidents" then me ;)

"With a club the bk16 performed as good if not better than the 9 chopping green poplar (a very soft wood IME)"

Seems an apples and oranges comparison to me. you are saying that the bk16 cross batoned as well as or better than the bk9 chopped. Ok. How did it compare to the bk9 in cross-batonning. I'd expect near identical results there but in a chop off, the bk9 will win every time. Additionally, the bk9 is pretty good at snap cuts.

I really like my bk 16 too, but they are different knives for pretty different jobs.

+1 on this. I've decided to refrain from my refraining of comments. Just because you have sharp objects does not mean that you don't have to pay attention. All the time. If you are afraid of a tool, then you shouldn't use it. If you have respect for tools, then youn should pay them due respect with your attention. Seat belts do not make unsafe drivers safe. Blade guards on tablesaws should serve as safety reminders, not carte blanche to be careless. A small knife will take off your finger as sure as a large knife (one of the reasons why some knife laws are....stupid. Yeah, I said it.). If the full size Becker handles make you feel as if you don't have control of the knife, I'd say put it on the shelf for a while, maybe find the same size blade with a handle you feel you can control. As much as I love the Beckers, this I understand; I don't have very big hands and my Camillus 2 handles are really too big for me so the knife fatigues my hand and forearm. They're not going to be for everyone, especially a younger someone who may not have full size hands for a full size grip.
That said, it'd be hard to really evaluate the performance of two different knives if you can't even get your hand around one of them. I think the 9 is a fantastic wood processor, one that I'd rather carry with a portable saw than the 16 and a saw....luckily for me, I can carry both. Now I just need a saw.

Thanks all! You have helped me change my mind about the king! I still need a folding saw though................ Thanks! I'll close this now :o
