My SAK failed... Details on the Canadian Warranty Experiance.

Just a bit of an update. I had not heard back from Victorianox so I called them and initiated the repair procedure. Apparently there is a issue with Firefox not showing all the links which made the process much harder than it had to be. To start a warranty repair you simply need to go to https://service.victorinox.com/default.aspx and select your product from the drop down menu. If you are using a Firefox browser this menu will be blank so you must use another browser. Select pocket tools from the drop down menu and fill out the forms required. I was unable to process my per-authorization online (likely due to my credit card company flagging it), but I was told to just send it in with my name, email return address and phone number and they will bill me when it arrives.

I likely wont have any updates for a few days.
Perhaps I missed it, but why did they want you to pay for "warranty" work?

Amazing that they still stuck by the warranty despite the alterations.
What alterations? The knife was unaltered when it broke unless you count the removal of the serrations but it was still the original blade. Do you mean the fact that I asked them to put in a different style of blade? Essentially I got back what I sent them. I would have preferred the non thumb hole version but given the fact that the soldier has a locking screwdriver blade I was not entirely sure if that was possible or not. Either way the knife was repaired and it made it back to me so I am happy.

There is a flat $5usd fee for the work. They did not charge me for parts, labour or return shipping.

Oh OK...I thought it was to pay for the parts or service or something. Glad you got your knife fixed up!

I too am surprised they did the repairs considering the altered blade, removing the serrations would be an alteration by almost anyone here. You explained how you removed them but you can't expect them to believe every story they hear about careful heat free blade alterations. I suspect most manufacturers wouldn't have covered the repair and blamed the removal of the serrations as the cause of failure. It is awesome that you received the non serrated version of the blade, often you get what you get with warranty repairs. I would suspect that the blade was flawed from original manufacturing and just held up until it didn't. Vic blades are pretty soft and bend readily before snapping in most cases, if you happen across a broken blade it is usually because it bent and someone tried bending it back so it would close properly.

I dropped off the original broken blade with my friend who is going to do some test on it when he has time. Hopefully I will hear back from him in the next few days. He's not charging me for the tests so there is no rush on it. When I hear back I will post with the results. Given the clean break I'm leaning towards a heat treat issue.
