My Satin BT6 is Finally Done!!!

Thanks everyone! I think it turned out great, and I really like the satin finish on this blade! I already like this knife more than the RMD, and that IS saying something!

Very nice. What sort of belt grinder are you using?

Just the ole Harbor Freight 1x30, but it requires a little bit of help to get going with these belts. Of note, every Schotchbrite belt I've ever gotten has been pretty tight on the grinder, and required some pre-stretching and softening. I do this by wrapping it around the crank handle on my vice, and then really leaning into it and working it back and forth around the small-diameter (~1/2") steel rod. The coarse belt I got in this shipment was by far the worst.

I'm also using some of the 3" scotchbrite-like disks from HF in my hand drill, in the coarse and medium grit.

That looks great! I love that color combo with the satin.

Yeah, it has really grown on me. I don't think I could have gotten a better color for use with camo clothing. :D

I really like uncoated BT6's! Here's mine helping out on the hog cutting board.

Yeah, if they made these a regular offering from the shop with a satin finish, I think they would sell like hot cakes!!! I'd definitely buy another! Nice cutting board BTW!

Beautiful work, SpyderPhreak. Now take that thing out and treat it like a rental.

She will be used, oh yes, she will be used... ;)

SWEET!!! Love how the BT6 looks with a satin finish!!!!!

Me too!!! :D :D :D

So I got some better pics today. I cleaned up the ricasso/talon hole areas a bit better, and it looks good now. You can't see it in the picture very well, but I've already gotten hairline scratches going lengthwise down the blade from insertion/removal from the cardboard sheath. No biggie, as this is going to be a user, but sometimes it amazes me how easily a really nice satin finish can get scratched up. Oh well.

More Pics!!! These show the blade pretty well from some different angles, and turned out a lot better than yesterday's did IMO.

Very good work, it turned out fantastic. If I didn't have too many in the pipe line already I would have gotten one of those. Hope it dismantles a lot of critters for you!

Putting my Pirtle sheath pics here. Thought I had already. :foot:

Took the BT6 Elk hunting last November...

I was quite happy with the BT6 as a hunting knife!  Nice fine, thin tip, but still a hefty blade when needed. Unfortunately, it didn't get to do any butchering, maybe next year. :( :grumpy:

That strip job really shows of the lines of the knife.

I would love to see a smaller version of this...maybe a 4-5" blade with a smaller handle- like the size/thickness of the RMD.

That came out excellent. I'm living that g10 combo and the sheath. I'll have to strip one of mine.

Man, that looks good stripped. Might be doing that to mine soon. But I'll probably leave it rustic looking, not polished up like that.

turned out great. still looks like a relaxing outing.

Was still an awesome trip! More than half of hunting is just getting out and being in nature. We rode ATV's up high the first morning, and got into a near blizzard for a few hours just below timberline. Dumped 8" of snow in those few hours!

However, if it hadn't been for that storm, there wouldn't have been any snow in my other pics! Was so warm and dry up in the mountains last year before winter really set in mid-December. That's a good part of why the hunting sucked, even in the 4th (last) season when we were up there. Here's a pic when the snow let up for a bit:

Wow, that green and black G10 looks very classy against the satin, and the Pirtle sheath dresses it up perfectly without getting gaudy. Really nice work and a beautiful result all around--truly a one-of-a-kind treasure.

Have you put a caliper on the blade since you polished her up, to see how thick the finished blade is?

Both knife and sheath look amazing! I guess I'll be looking into Pirtle sheaths next time I'm in the market for some leather!

Thanks! Everything about this package turned out just about perfect, and it is destined to ride on my belt for many hunts to come! :D I don't recall if I measured it after cleaning her up, so I just did. ;) 0.204" - 0.205" thick on the flats.

BTW, the knife rode out that snowstorm on my belt, and not a hint of rust later that evening, even at the pommel end where I didn't clean up the INFI dimples quite as much. Was glad to see that wasn't going to be an issue.

Polished INFI is almost patina-proof in my experience, as long as the decarb layer is cleaned away. Thanks for the measurement--what a great blade.
