Hey guys,

I thought I would post my second knife, and see what you all think about it....

Thank you,

Thanks for the kind words.

I know, I was against the naming thing, and I probably won't do it much, but it felt right.

I think I will continue to name 'art' knives.... But, I would not name a normal model the same way....

The handle is Flame Maple, also known as fiddleback or tiger maple.

Thanks again,
Marion

Yeah, curly, which is the most common or the most accurate name?

I did a little web research, and it seems that flame is the 'technical' term, I don't know....

Stained and oiled.

I'd call that one curly. Curly is the term for the pattern with parallel waves, perpendicular to the grain. Fiddleback is a tight, uniform curl. There's also "frog's hair" curl (very tight like 10-20 per inch), broken curl, and various combinations with other figures like "curly-quilted", or "ropey-curl".

I'll be honest and say I don't know exactly what flame figure is. It's usually used on wood I'd simply call curly. Sometimes it describes crotch figure. I've only seen the word associated with finished pieces like guitars.

I agree, curly maple would be the most commonly used name. Flamed would be tighter stripes at a right angle across vertical grain (quartersawn). Mainly used for guitars.
Good looking knife. Keep up the good work.

Ah, so flame figure is what you get when you quartersaw certian quilted maple and get what looks like a hard-edged curl? I like the look, but didn't realize the name.

Very nice. May be your second knife but it sure doesn't look like your second forged piece. That pommel (?) is very impressively tight and even.
