My sharpened prybar came in (SOD)

KGD,

Add to the 'you might be a knife nut' post that you battoned and chop tested your CHRISTMAS TREE. For God's sake....

TF

Hey that's the only reason I relented on the 'real tree' :D

BTW Talfuchre - bought some cedar yesterday and will make an attempt later on the bow drill. For now, gotta take the dogs for a walk and look for my bow

How do you like the yardhook with the recurve? Is it easy to sharpen?

I bought the yardhook directly from SY Knives. I was trying to buy a big Swamp Rat knife but none were for sale from SW, and this was the only model (and only knife) Scrap Yark had.

I was surprised how good it chopped being only 7". I guess weight means something. The curved blade is sort of like a kuri. I have touched up the blade a little with a diamond coated rod and some crock sticks. The traditional plates or sandpaper would have a problem with the curve. I don't think a chopper has to be as sharp as say a Kephart. I can take or leave the hook. I never took the time to cut it off with a mototool since I don't have a grinder.

kgd, can you tell me about the green scale liners on the RAT-6? Was that standard or added afterwards? I handled a lot of the RAT line at Blade last year, and the only reason I don't own one is because the handles felt small for my hands. Fattening the handle seems like it would make a difference for me.

Hi Guyon,

The RC-6 has both a longer and thicker handle then the RC-3 and RC-4. The SOD's handle is still a bit on the thicker side though. Regarding the RC-4, simply holding the knife, the handle feels a bit smallish, but using the knife it feels pretty good. Its a bit hard to explain. The RC-6 handle does feel pretty full size to me. For my hands, the RC-6 and the SOD feel really good and pretty similar even though there are slight differences in size between them.

All of the commercial Rat Cutlery products have a green liner on them. The military and LEO designated ones have a red liner. The G10 (orange slabs) have no liner. Initially, the decision to put the green liners on the RC-3, as per Jeff Randall's response to me via their own forum when the knife came out, was to provide an immediately distinguishable feature to the RC versus Ontario products. This was of course when RatCutlery was just starting up and on friendly terms with Ontario.

One thing I certainly give the SOD the edge on is winter use. The fully coverage handle and rubber like feel of the Resiprene C is warm to the touch. The somewhat bigger handle is also very hand filling and secure with gloves. Here is a shot with the SOD in my mitten hands. I could chop and manipulate the blade with ease in my mitts!
