My sheath has too much oil in it...

So I am making this sheath and I use darkening oil to soften up the leather and of course darken it. I for some reason went overboard with the oil and now the leather is saturated. Been about three days and the stuff is still leeching out onto my hands while I work the sheath. What do I do to get some of this stuff out? I scraped the underside to get as much of it out as I could but I have no Idea what to do about the skin side. When you bend the leather the stuff oozes. Ugh.

I do have Lexol, but it seems I have to use less oil to get the same amount of softness. That's why I have been using the oil.

put a few layers of paper towels and then some newspaper on both sides of the leather and weight it down. keep doing this till you no longer get any oil out. then try some alcohol on it in small quantities on the flesh side. maybe someone with a little more experience with leather will post with a better idea. lexol is some good stuff, i use it too.

Like Richard said in the above post, you're going to have to "squish" out the oil and have an absorbent medium around it to soak it up.

Just leave it alone. The oil will dry out eventually. When I oil a sheath, they stay wet for days, but do finally stop oozing. The oil also protects the blade to a good degree.

First, the last thing you want is a soft sheath as they should be rather hard. Lexol is a good conditioner but Tan-cote, Bag-cote or Leather Sheen would be a better top coat.To get get the oil out try plain white paper towels(newspaper or colored towels might impart ink into the leather then you have another problem to deal with) then give it some time. Finally, I would use some denatured alcohol then let it dry and try a new finish.Dave:)

Another tip: Should you have fingerprints or dirt on your leather use Oxalic Acid or Wood Bleach to clean it.Works great

Thanks for the tips guys. I am not so concerned about the inside per se, but getting the outside to a happy medium is the goal.
