My Silky Saw Collection....w/ PICS

Quiet Mike

I would replace a bow saw with a BigBoy with either LRG or XL teeth

norcalblacktail-Thanks for the info. Just curious, why would you pick the Bigboy over a non folder? I was thinking about the Zorin or Ibuki for big work.
Not trying to start an argument, just to understand your reasoning.

Either of those would be fine. I for some reason was thinking size was an issue. The folders take up a little less space than the fixed with sheaths on. The Zorin and Ibuki are SERIOUS hand saws. The Zorin sounds so cool when you cut with it.

norcal,

I am thinking about ordering a Sugoi 360. I need to clear the lower branches on about 50-70 moutain cedar/juniper trees. The branches are 2" to 4" thick. What do you think of this blade and how easy are they to sharpen?

That is an insane collection of saws you have!

Joel

THe Sugoi is a good saw. You may want to get its bigger brother(420) because it does not have an ivy tip at the end and you would be able to pull all the way through. Id say get either the Sugoi 420 or the Ibuki 390. Either would suit you just fine. Or try the KAMISORIME 375. Its new and has a new design. I have yet to try it. All of these can be sharpened with a file. Which is something I have not had to do yet and I am not even sure where to find the file you need. Some Silkys are impulse hardened which means they stay sharper longer but cant be sharpened. I do know there is a store near me across the Bay that sharpens Silkys. Ill have to ask them about it and see if they sell the files you need.

Hope this helps.

I bought one more. I will now own the pocketboy, and the Big Boy 360 large teeth.

The big one will stay in the truck.

Norcal,

Thanks for the feedback. How is an ivy tip used? There is alot of prickly ivy crawling up the same cedar trees. I couldn't find anything on their site.

Joel

The Ivy tip is on the Sugoi 360 only. If you look at the 3rd pic down in my first post you can see it. Its used by hooking the ivy vine and pulling. It works great when you need to first clean up some vines on a tree. If you have a lot of vine on the trees it wouldnt be a bad choice.

I think I want a black pocketboy 170 with large teeth.
Prices are actually much better then I thought.

Norcalblacktail,

Silky does sell the files. With the impulse hardened Zubat blade, I'm going to have to use a diamond sharpener when the time comes.

Yeah I figured they would... Ive just never had to sharpen any of mine yet. Keep them clean and they will stay sharp for a very long time. DWK do you have experience sharpening them?

No, I haven't used the saws long enough to need sharpening. I have a couple small, fine EZ Lap diamond sharpeners that I normally use for serrated blades and fish hooks. May be able to sharpen saw teeth with them.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful,

My pal who is an arborist said that when working full-time 8-12 hours a day with his Zubat (impulse hardened), it took 4-6 months to wear out a blade. Even when worn, I used his Zubat and cut faster than I have ever cut anything by hand in my life.
