My son and HI in Korea

Welcome Tom,My Dad was at Schofield when the Japs hit Pearl!Which K,well, guess I could help!:DBe a little more specific, it really won't matter, you will wind up getting more than one!! Then one of your buds will want you then another! Sigh!! You don't realize it but YOU are in tbl!!Also you are a member of a special group of WACKOS now,you are a member of the Cantina!!:D Don't dispair however, just remember there is "one" sane guy here!ME!;)Quite a few military & ex military here so pull up a chair you are gonna feel right at home!
THE SAINT!

Jim (tsimi, duck, nutcase, quackipuss, saint??:barf: :D )

YOu didn't recommend a 12" K (your fav) to the new guy??? :D :D

Welcome Tom. My son's in the military and loves his 18" Serupati. It's pretty light, comparatively speaking, pretty fast, and can still hold its own in the chopping area. Then there's the WWII, either length...I have a lighter than normal 18" and love it. These are probably two of my favs for having to carry all day and rely on to perform a number of different tasks. So, your choice? Why not get both? You will eventually...not kidding. I was told the same thing and really didn't believe it until the first one arrived on my doorstep. Ooops. Now I have eight...and so it continues.

Welcome.

Take a little time to read through these recent threads
for a broad range of more good input on khuk selection:

Again, Welcome.
And hope you find something you like.

Welcome to the Psycho Ward Tommy!!!!:D

You can't really make a bad choice, but it depends on whether you like light or heavier knives.
Personally for a lighter khuk I like the Chitlangi, for an all around bruiser that's heavy, but not "too" heavy my favorite is the BGRS or 18" Ganga Ram Special.
But my most favorite khuks of all are my BirGorka Villagers in the 16" to 18" size!!!!

Welcome, Tommy!

Look around and take your time making up your mind. Remember that back in Nepal, there are a couple hundred styles of khukuri's ( at least ) and most all of them have good reason to be the size and shape they are.

Also remember that these are hand-forged and no one khuk will be exactly the same as another. And strange but true, you can tune in on some khuks that have a spirit to them.

My advice,( which is worth what you paid for it, ) is that a number of folks agree that the 16.5" WW2 is regarded by them as the khuk they'd grab when they don't have a clue as to what they'll need it for. But they're pretty sure that khuk is up to the task, whatever it turns out to be.

Some of the same folks like to keep a 12" Ang Khola ( AK ) around for when they don't have a khuk on them, if that makes any sense.

Lastly, you might get one of those vinyl keyboard covers in case you start drooling on the keyboard or someone makes a crack that makes you spit a mouthful over it.

Welcome Tommy, it's always good to meet a new inmat... I mean enthusiast. I've got only an 18" Kobra and a BAS so far. Let me tell you, you're going to be surprised by whatever you get, these knives are built tough.

:D Thanks for the welcome...somehow I think I'll be just one more pecan in the local nutroll. :D

I have an "issue" Gorka khukhuri on the way, mail order from Oz. Hopefully I haven't been e-bilked, but either way, it'll be something on which I'll be able to learn sharpening/burnishing/honing, and maybe a little modification.

Gonna send off for something from HI soon; Just can't seem to decide which blade to order first!

thanks for the links. I'll spend part of the weekend studying and trying to assimilate what is obviously some rich and cherished history. -Tommy

Ben?

Let us know what your son, or his friend, decide upon please.

Also, the carry regs would be of interest to me.

Hope the hip and all that are moving along.

Kis, I heard that my son's buddy got a hold of a khuk by Ka-Bar. I didn't know Ka-Bar made a khuk like object. Funny thing is (go figure), the young man was a little disconcerted when my son compared his HI to the Ka-Bar. I may save up my pennies for a really good UBBB and send it to this youngster and see if we can get a Ka-Bar/HI field report from Korea. I'll also get the carry regs.

Oh, the hip is starting a test of wills with me. There is a pool at school to see if I can last until the break in November or if I have to reschedule surgery for an earlier date. One of my teachers (I wonder if he's in the pool?) brought me some ointment that they use on horses in Mexico. He swears by it. I was reading the label and I think it may also be good for the horn handles on my khuks. Smells about the same as Hooflex. And yes, I did try it this evening. I'm at the point where I will try almost anything.

Tommy,

Here is part of another thread I was asked to contribute to. It's in practical tactical under a Khukri thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=266477&perpage=20&pagenumber=2

On the 12" AKs a few are floating around here. I picked up one of the villagers for myself and I'm planning on making a plastic sheath, cross draw above the belt in utilites. I view as a useful knife that chops better than a Ka-bar.

I can make arguments for both 15 and 18" models. Basically I settled on 18" GS as the best all around, though a light 18" AK went through here but it's (on it's owners hip) is still in Iraq.

S/F (RLTW), Mike

FOG...everyone...I appreciate the input and the advice. I have a lot to learn, and I look forward to conducting some serious empirical research with various Khukhuris in the field.

btice...I apologize for derailing this thread. I wish your son the best of luck in the ROK, and hope that you're able to get the blade to him, and that he finds it useful there!

Tommy, don't worry about derailing the thread. I don't know if we ever stay "on track" all that long anyway. That's half the fun. I'm using another computer because the thunder storm took out my modem the other day. Funny smell...thought it was the horse ointment I was using on my hip...guess it wasn't. New modem tomorrow; before the two for one special. Does anyone know when the next shipment of 12" AK Villagers are expected?

BTW, Tommy, have you decided on which one yet?

Got a funny smell from my 19" monitor. You have any idea how small a 14" monitor is after using a 19"? Fortunately ( keep you fingers crossed for me, ) a friend tells me it's often due to dust settliing and to blow it out with canned air. It's 3 years old and he says you need to do that every six months to a year.
