My Son asked me a question that I will let you guys answer for him, please

Everything looks easy until you try it yourself. I have a fair number of new patients every year who were brought in after a friend played back alley chiropractor. There's a reason I went to school for seven years. Same goes for making knives. It's not the hardest thing on earth "to do," but it isn't easy, and it's definitely not easy to do really well. Pick up some steel and give it a shot, is the best answer.

:footinmou :footinmou :footinmou :footinmou I believe that is in need, this is Matt by the way and its alot harder than I thought, I was at it for 7 hours on 2 blades before I had one ready to heat treat. The first is stuck in the window sill to remind me not to push so hard on the grinder lol. Well im gonna go heat treat!!

Good to hear.
Keep at it, even when you're not getting what you were thinking it would look like.
Experience takes time, but don't do what I do, and try for that perfect knife.
I've been working on that one for about 12 years, and it's still not right...
Have fun with it.

Matt, you are doing great, my thinking. Your dad is a really good knife maker and knows the ins and outs. It's also very refreshing to see a son get involved in our trade. Being another one of the old school self taught, I wish I had a dad knife maker and could have taught me some knife making. He did teach me some farm type forging and grinding, along with plenty of tool use. Yours is a really wonderful opportunity, Matt. Hey, give that old rascal Bruce a pat on the back for me, will you?

Got Matt in the forge this morning,Not bad for a begginer. Now he will really have a reason to try and grind correctly :D get some pictures later tonight when I can get them on my website to post.
Oh yea,he said I was CRAZY for starting to forge at 7:30 am after not getting to bed untill 4:30 am,but hay that is the way I work, boy was he tired :D he was doing this allot  @ somemore. But he survived :)
Now to finish grind the one he ground out last night and heat treated.

Matt listen to the ole man..
when my boys were 15 it was about the time I started to get numb and I
don't have a clue why..
when time passed and when they got to be about 21,, for some reason I started to get smarter again . again,, not sure why?
but I am sure glad I'm getting my smarts back again :)
but it seemed to fade in and out, (there is 3 years between the two boys. :) )

life is very short to be making mistakes that has already been made,,,
to learn
by someone else's trials and tribulations to save you the time, is priceless. looking at it from your end of time,,
it's hard to see until it's too late.. I hope you are one of the wiser ones ;) and this will apply to all aspects of life.
times are not all that different in the way of learning..
of course a little hard headiness will build in some character too.. :D
good luck to the both of you ;) :)

I have taught youth of various ages for years through scouting and other organizations and that seems to be a popular question with some of them "how hard can it be?"
I personally dread that question and wonder why they just couldn't ask about the birds and the Bees or how to get along with their girls freinds, I tend to learn so much more that way when they explain to me how the information I am giving them is wrong........ :)
