My son got his first pocket "knife" this morning!

A momentous occasion.
Indeed, there is hope for the future of Traditional knives.
Nice going, Pops!!

Ha! Excellent! Won't be too long before that first Peanut arrives in his life. Awesome job of coloring :)

Congratulations on providing an excellent way to ease his rite of passage.

Thanks for all of the nice comments everyone! He is such a great kid. It has been a joy to watch him grow, but at the same time it makes me a little sad seeing how fast it has happened...

I overheard him talking to his little brother (2 years old), "No, you can't play with this. It's too sharp for you. This is only for big boys." :)

I gave my two kids something similar a couple of years ago. Mine came from AG Russell and were a lock back configuration. All was well until my son stabbed one his sister's (she is 3 years older) teddy bear. I had to liberate them for a couple of months. That was two years ago and his is now (at 7) able to use "his knife" ( green bone Case sway back jack) under supervision. Steven

my boys are 10 and 5 and I am amazed at how quickly time has flown by. I too was lamenting the passing of their youth. Not that they aren't still young, but I miss their previous stages. I'm happy that they are growing up healthy and w/good heads on their shoulders, but I miss their "smallerness".

When it comes time to give him a real knife, what do you think would be a good first knife? Sodbuster, SAK, a dull Opinel? I have a little bit before I'm a dad, but its never to late to wonder.

I have a Case Trapper in red bone I bought back in high school that he says he wants. When it comes time, I'll let him pick out what he wants I guess (within reason :)). Probably a Case, Buck, SAK or something along those lines though if he doesn't want something of mine.

I wish they had those when my guys were little, that is a great idea!

They do grow up so fast, it seems like yesterday my boys were that size, now they are both taller than I am :D

Thanks for sharing your family with us! Cool story and GREAT lookin kid, he does look happy holding his 1st knife doesn't he.
