My son made me a knife

My oldest son is 13 and snuck around all December in my shop and made me a knife for Christmas. I was pretty proud of him. He has made some with me before, so knew the general process, and I made one with my neighbor, so he conspired with him to help a bit. The grinds look like they were great, though they got washed out during hand sanding. He left the edge a bit thick for heat treat, and when he went to sharpen it, he ended up with a large secondary bevel...kind of scandi like. If you look higher up, you can see the deep initial bevel line. He did nail the heat treat though, and this thing is psycho sharp. I made a pair of leather pants for it today so I can carry it and use it. It's O1 steel.

Wow thats a great gift. Keep raising him right. I really dig the design. I like the large secondary bevel. In the picture it looks like a full flat grind with a scandi grind.

Yea, it's hard to see the bevel in this picture. It's about 1.5" deep. I just sliced up a bunch of chateaubriand for some steak chili with it. It was like butter. I plan on seeing what this will do with a deer next year.

Lovely knife and great gift.
Don't let him stop on this one :)

That's a great looking knife. What a cool gift from your son and make for a great heirloom.

That is impressive. But what is most impressive is that he did it in your shop without you even knowing about it!!! Tell that young man well done.
