My son's first pocket knife.

My son started Cub Scouts last week. He wants to get his whittle chip so he can carry a pocket knife. I tried a few of my old " token" knives to see if he could safely manipulate them. They were all to stiff or complicated or small or big or.... Pick a problem. None of them were good quality anyway. I decided to make a whole " thing" out of it. I drove him to the local cutlery shop. Rivers Edge Cutlery has done well by me in the past. I'm not a huge knife guy, so I decided a spending limit was in order. I set out to only spend 40 dollars. We spent a good 30 minutes looking at this or that. Nothing seemed to fit what I wanted for him. Not to big. Not to small. Something he could pass down but it wouldn't kill me if he lost it. He is a kid after all. The more we looked , the higher my spending limit went. The young lady behind the counter suggested I look at the consignment knives. Used knives!? Seemed odd to me but I looked at a couple. It was more of the same. I was about to asker to get out the 70 dollar knife I saw in the case when behind me I heard my son ask to see "that one down there". I turned around to see him opening and closing this old beat up knife with no effort. Easily working through it. It was by no means the shiny new knife I had in mind, but it was 20 bucks. " he could possibly lose it anyway " I thought. Oh well. "Looks like you found a keeper , Jake". I said as I wiggled the blade to make sure it wasn't too loose. I didn't really look at it until we were paying for it. I said " Jake , did you realize what this is ?" He said " yeah , it's a pocket knife". It was a very old scout knife. His first knife for scouts turned out to be an old Ulster.

Welcome. I bet that is memory Jake wont forget and will cherish later on.

For pictures, I use photobuck it and just copy the IMG link to the post.

Really curious to see how old this thing really is. Thinking it could be from the 60-70s. Found a similar knife for sale. Add said it was from the 50s but that doesn't seem right.

Nice! Thank you for sharing the story and photos.

If you post the IMG code

then it will embed the photo like this

That's a good knife. He is going to have a lot of great memories associated with it, starting with shopping with his dad for his first knife! Well done!

What an awesome story and memory. He will think of you and your time walking around, getting to choose whatever he wanted every time he pulls it out. Very useful camp knife for a young scout, and that spear blade and shield would be a 5-year-old Jimbo's dream knife :)

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the replies guys. Anybody know how old this knife might be? Just curious. Would be nice to know for conversation's sake.

Your son has a good eye!! Fortunality for you the date range for that tang stamp (assuming I read it correctly) is narrow- from 1941-1943. I got this information from my older Levine guide book. There are several Ulster knives in my collection, they are solid knives:thumbup:

Great story and Knife...what a great memory your son will have.

I think that one is more in the 60's-70's era. ULSTER with USA underneath puts it in the time frame. If it reads ULSTER with KNIFE CO under it, that would put it in the 40's era.

Standsleeper38, thanks for the great story!:thumbup:
Work has been taking up way too much of my time lately, and I should have been in bed over an hour ago, but I just read this thread with a stupid grin on my face; thanks for brightening a pretty stressful day!!:D
