My son's first pocket knife.

Lol , I bet your Son spotted the best Scout knife in the entire store. Great story.

Great story, thanks for sharing. He sure picked out a beauty of a knife. He's a lucky boy to have a father that is willing to take him knife shopping like that. I am a Cubmaster, and I'd love to have parents that take a proactive involvement like that.

This is soooo typical. We look and shop for our kids, but so often we underestimate them. They often have a better idea than we have of what they want. Too often our own wants get involved and it's not what they may want. Left to their own devises, the kids will make a great choice. Bu the time Karen and were raising our third one, I had learned to just stand back and let them choose. Unless they were making a horrendous choice, I let them be.

Kids are often smarter than we are.

Outstanding choice, Standsleeper38! Hope your lad uses it in good health for many years.

Thanks guys. So far so good. I need to get better at sharpening. This thing holds an edge fine but I picked out a piece of cedar for him to carve. Lol. Don't know what I was thinking. Pine or maple would have been better. I just keep sharpening it. He is half way done.

Get him a hunk of basswood or a freshly fallen branch. Either one will be much easier to carve.
Also, once you get a good edge, just strop after every 15 min or so or whenever the knife doesn't cut as well. Don't want to sharpen the knife away.

Tell him he picked well. It put a big smile on my face too.

Great story, brought back memories of my daughter(she's a freshman in college ) thanks for sharing!
