My Squatch Rusted!

All I can figure is the knife was warm and maybe moist from use outside, and when it cooled inside in the sheath, some condensation formed. Pretty or not, the Sarsquatch is a very nice camp knife. I like my bowie version as well.

Yes, I like your Bowie version too:thumbup:....that's probably why I like the Jackhammer and RMD so much....the Bowie version of the Sasq though would make for the next rung up on the ladder from the JH I guess....probably ideal as a "one knife carry" as it would have a fair old chopping ability as well.

Mine are the 6" x.5" maroon colored "CLEAN AND FINISH" in medium and fine from Scotchbrite. I don't see them in the on line catalog. They are on page 1694A in the catalog I have. They mount with some mandrels on my 1/2" shaft of my B&D bench grinder.

I had the same problem trying to find the scotch-brite wheels in Texas. No luck at the big box stores, but I finally found them at ACE hardware stores. It looks like they have some in TN. Happy hunting...

Thanks for the tip. There's an ACE not too far from me.

I recall from previous threads on this subject it is the decarburized layer that leads to rusting. Decarb happens in the Heat Treat, as carbon is burned out of the surface skin of the steel.

I wouldn't know a carbide or a decarb if either one bit me on the bottom, but I do recall now that the term "decarb" was the one used in conjunction with the oxidation. Thanks for the explanation, Guy.

Jerry said that one of the ways you could sort the problem out is by bead blasting a D/C finish on the CE knives....I might do this on my Jackhammer but it has such a great edge on it which is lost on the bead blasting that I have left it so far.

No rust yet and that is in wet old England....b

Spot on! I do this to anything I strip or is 'bare'. Works a treat so far!

Interesting, RG. I'd have thought the softer wheel that I linked to to be LESS aggressive than the hard wheel.

I've got one of the original-run Squaches, so my hand-finished convex edge goes up higher. It only needs work near the flats to get rid of the rust and gunk. The second batch had a lot more decarb on them. EEEK!
