I LOVE edc'ing my Harpy (it is one of the older versions, with carbon fiber/g10 handles. AND unadjustable pivot pins)

So the prob is that it is VERY hard to open, i can open it in one hand, but it requires A LOT of thumb power, and takes at least 8 seconds.

I am wondering what I can do to make it open smoothly and faster?

The prob with this I think is that the pivot pins are unopenable...

thanks for help everyone!

The only knife I have with a permanently pinned pivot (say that three times fast) is my Dragonfly. It started off fairly stiff, but loosened up very nicely after a few weeks of regular use. From what I've heard this is the case with most pinned Spydies. . . Just play with it. . . er, I mean practice with it until it loosens up (or until your thumb gets strong enough to open it easier :p).

My only other thought is that you might try giving it a good cleaning. Use the hottest water you can and rinse the knife long enough for the metal to warm up and the water will evaporate out of the enclosed spaces pretty quickly. Give it a shot of WD-40 just in case any moisture does remain, and finish up with a few drops of mineral oil (or whatever lubricant you prefer).

Stuff as much toothpaste into the pivot as you can and open and close for a few mintues, rinse and repeat if necessary.

Prior to this wash and oil the pivot see if it makes a difference.

oh my thanks guys! i used cooking oil and now it opens smoothly!

just gotta get rid of some oil on the surface~

thanks again!

not a good idea cooking oil will go rancid with time and actually get quite gummy. Best thing to do would be to clean that out and at least use some mineral oil as opposed to like vegtable oil.

FWIW, it sounds like the knife you have is a Merlin, the FRN (Zytel) handled version of the Harpy, since both the G-10 Harpy and sprint run CF Harpy have screw pivots.

Vegetable oil!!! Please heed builderman's warning. Clean your knife out with some dish soap and warm water and use a different lube.

Vegetable oil is not a suitable oil for knife lubrication. It will go rancid especially in the the warmth of your pocket. And it will become gooey, and gummy over time. You can buy a pint of mineral oil in any drugstore (its only a buck or two) and it is a good lube as it is food safe. There are lots of good lubes out there, but vegetable oil is not one of them.
