I have been a police officer for the last 14 years and last year I was chasing a suspect on foot and tore a hole in my shoulder. I had surgery and i am unable to lift my right arm up very high. I am gonna be forced to retire, so I was trying to find a new purpose in life. I had a hard time with the thought of not being a police officer anymore, but i have come to terms with it. I enjoy making things and I enjoy trying to make knives. This is what I will be doing for the next 8 years unitl my wife can retire. I lost alot , because this is all i got to do in my day. Other than laundry and house cleaning. So that is my story, for now.

Thank you for your service. Folks (including me) thank military all the time, but I think 1st responders should be thanked as well. Sorry to hear about the injury, good luck with your new pastime.

Man I know EXACTLY how you feel.
I was in the army, hit my head on a parachute jump and started having seizures. In 2013 I was forced to retire as a 24 year old. Knife making has definitely helped me out. I hope it can help you out as well.
Best thing you can do is stay proactive and keep moving. This is a great way to keep your mind busy.
As John said, thank you for your service. Police officers don't get nearly the respect they deserve.

Thank you both for your service. I wanted to serve this country whether it be military or police but to many physical issues are going to keep me from getting in. Thank you both again.

Daniel.

Wait a minute... you mean you weren't randomly beating minorities and harassing sovereign citizens when you got injured? Boring.

Just messing. My family mostly consists of military, law enforcement, paramedics, firefighters and nurses. Talk about feeling inadequate at holiday gatherings. Good to have you here and thank you for your service.

That really sucks about your career brother. You can't take an inside job?

The great thing about knife making is how many different things there are to learn. Also, if I'm not in the mood to go into the shop and grind, I'll just sit down and sketch knife ideas. Some turn out better than others o_O

Stick with it, enjoy it, and try to challenge yourself every now and then.

Thanks for your service. Best wishes for your recovery. I can understand your pride and the disappointment of having to leave that line of work. I hope you find another way to serve your community that is as rewarding.

I think that I might to be able to relate a little to your situation. Twenty years ago or so I developed a tumor in my spine at the base of my brain and underwent a dicey surgery with three neurosurgeons for about 8 1/2 hours. When I woke up I could not move and was in the most incredible pain. After some months I learned to walk again but had severe nerve damage. Within a year I was working again as a real estate appraiser. Many years later my left knee was shot so another operation of a steel replacement and I fell during he recovery and fractured my hip which had to be replace also. I do not mean to "steal your thunder" but my experience has taught me that things are not the end of the world but they sure as hell are hard to deal with. My advice is to pursue your interest in knife making but it is not the ONLY thing you can do. After all, you were able to be selected to be a police officer and I am sure that you have more potential than you think at the present time. It takes a while to adjust to a new life in my view and I wish you the best. By all means make a knife and then make another..even better and so it goes. Good luck and send pictures. First up be blessed. Change like this isn't easy, but pushing forward and working towards something that is meaningful and engaging to you is important. I had a friend who died of Lou Gerhigs disease. Most active positive person I have known. I couldn't understand how positive he was in the face of death and told him that one night. His answer was that he couldn't control what happened to him and when death would come. But he could control his attitude and he was going to choose to live happy and positive until the end. Blew me away.
Grab onto things that bring you life and live to the fullest. Finally, be blessed again.

That's a great attitude! Keep that up and you'll do fine in your new endeavors. You have a tremendous resource here and if I can ever be of help don't hesitate to contact me.
