My Strider lock-fix

I love the Strider but the lock-rock and late lock-up bothered me. Here's my fix.
1) Locate a piece of electrical shrink tubing. Closest to diameter of stop pin the better. This was a bit large and still worked great.

2) Cut it to just less than the height of the stop pin.
3) Place on stop pin and apply heat. It will shrink to fit perfectly!

4) Do the other side.

Lock-up is now at 10%

Zero blade play what so ever. Solid!

The best thing about this fix is, nothing is taken apart. No undue wear occurs. As the plastic wears in 15% lock-up will occur. Plastic is easy to replace if need be. Win win!

Oh yes!

Well, Strider will put in a larger stop-pin, free of charge, but you have the turn-around time with the service dept.
I have owned many Striders in four folder models, and have NOT experienced any lockup problems.

Why don't they simply start with a larger stop pin? Strider are you reading this! Sell your knife with a 10% lock-up. MKT might of read this!

I may be in the minority, but 10% lockup always makes me a little nervous. I like my framelocks to have 25% or greater.

You can use rubber O-rings to do this as well.....

I must be lucky or something, but I have never had an issue with any Strider I have owned.

That is the new geometry as well....
Are you sure your pivot is tight?

Kinda sucks that you need to do that (or anything at all) to fix a $400 folder, doncha think?

This happens more then you think...

I am currently EDC'ing a Tom Krien Shard that costs a fair bit more then that Strider and it has some up and down play.

Lock-up is still only around 20% though, and by looking at the geometry, I am confident that as it wears in it will go away.

I have 6 Striders. 3 SMFs and 3 SnGs. Every one is fantastic. Great lock up and zero play. I had a custom, like JR88fan, although a different maker, and it didn't lock up near as well as my Striders.

The issue does happen with older knives though, and this fix seems cool. I wouldn't hesitate to try it if I needed to. Great trick.

Mine is new generation. Every 3 or 4 opens, the lock would rock. When the lock was engaged and not rocking, the lock-up was at around 60%. When the pivot was tightened, this still occurred. My stop pins look smaller than some I've seen on this site. Could be my eyes.

Thanks for posting the fix although it's not needed on my SnG.

My choice was to live with a questionable lock-up issue. Just mine not all Striders. The other choice was send in back and play the postal/waiting game. Lastly was to correct the problem without taking anything apart or placing any undue stress anywhere. No at this price point it shouldn't be etc.etc. I do like this knife as much as my Hinderer, CRK, Spyderco, Benchmade and SAK. Because I like knives. This cost me nothing and it never left my sight. I feel more connected to this blade some how. Anyway here is where lock-up is and I'm loving it!

I had to do the same thing to my sng earlier this year; lock-rock like crazy and late too so this seemed like a good fix LOL.

How long does it usually take for a framelock to "wear in?" My TSF Beast developed lock rock and its been eight months since Jim said it would "wear in."

I had a similar issue before. I emailed Josh at Strider and he said send it in. I did and got back what appeared to be a new titanium side. All I can say is.....the more Strider haters there are....the more Striders there are for me and the rest of the Strider lovers. Striders are great knives and take a certain kind of person to understand what they are I guess. I'll buy them as long as I can. To the OP....please send that in and take that silly heat shrink off now. Even Mick himself would tell you the same. Trust me and others, you will love that SMF more when it gets back after being properly fixed.

I doubt they'd fix mine because of the wave mod LOL... ;):foot::rolleyes:

Wave mod? Didn't look like you did anything to it. Email Josh Lee and ask, I bet they will fix ya right up.
