First I apologize for no pics...but the knives described herein are pretty "plain vanilla" and I think everyone will know what they look like!

I went out to visit one of my other sites here in Northern Iraq today...somewhere out near the Syrian border. I thought you might be interested in what I had along in the way of cutlery. "Survival" is not some abstract thing I think about from time to time over here, but something that may face me anytime I head out flying to another site here.

So, what did I have one me? Plain, simple cutlery that works for me:thumbup::

In my pockets:

Benchmade Desert Griptilian (440C blades and a muddy-colored handle)
Case 6344SS Medium Stockman
Victorinox Super Tinker SAK

In my survival gear or on its belt:

Cold Steel Carbon V SRK
Leatherman Wave, with black finish
Victorinox Ranger SAK

Just one guy's opinion of what constitutes "survival cutlery!" :D

What I consider "survival cutlery" is a group of tools that I have personally tried and tested, know how to use well, have plenty of experience with, and can perform, in one way or another, every task that I can think of. However, the last stipulation being the case, if I am ever in what would constitute a "survival situation" and my tools have me at a performance level to which nothing is a problem, be it gathering food, building shilter, etc., then I am no longer having to survive. At that point, I'm just camping. It just might not be my choice to camp.

With all of that being said, at the moment, I would put my trust in my R.A.T. Cutlery RC-4 combined with my Leatherman Charge TTi and my R.A.T. Izula Prototype necker. My Leatherman case, which is on my person along with my RC's, has in it an Army firsteel, emergency tinder, and a mini maglite. I feel comfortable knowing this stuff is with me at all times. I think I would do just fine in most situations, pertaining to tools, with these.

Looks like you know your Cutlery!!!

Stay Safe --and we thank you for your Service Bro

Another thanks for your service!

That SRK is one of the better models CS put out.

Dylside, I didn't even go into what is in my survival fanny pack. I will not even attempt to list the items there, but suffice it to say there are multiple firestarting items, first aid items, just plain useful items, and a miscellany of lightweight "stuff" that I have decided upon as either necessities or "nice-to-haves" over the past 3 decades I've had a use for such things in my work. You are correct in your assessment of a non-choice "camping trip" in your context. A "non-choice camping trip" in an area occupied by folks who don't like you, and have the means to do something about it is something else! For that there are other items I sometimes carry (think 7.62x39).:D

The Carbon V SRK was one the best bang for the buck knives of all time. Hope it serves you well as you fight the good fight over there  You have a far tougher go at day to day survival than I will ever know!

tknife, I picked up that SRK at one of the PX's over here back in early 2005. I convexed the edge myself, and it is the closest thing to a "sharpened pry bar" I have ever owned. It is quite capable of cutting through aluminum aircraft skin with little damage to the blade's edge. It's a handy, inexpensive knife to have around.

I have been "made fun of" for carrying as few as three knives at once. Sounds like a viable collection of tools to me.

Keep yer ass intact over there and "thanks."

Thank you for all you are doing.
Hope you never have to use your tools for survival but they are good tools to have along if needed.
Thanks again.

Good selection...I used my multi-tool a lot more than I thought I would. Stay safe brother...we'll have to do that gun show in Austin when you get back,

Thanks, guys! And Bryan, I plan on adding one of your knives to my selection over here. Will discuss that with you later!

ROCK6, I figured you would know the location I was talking about...lovely spot, isn't it? And, yes, we'll definitely do the gun show in Austin in July! I'm looking forward to it!

I can vouch for Bryan's Kelly knife...that's a sweet user! PM/email me when you get back...I'm currently getting wet at Fort Lewis, WA for a couple of weeks...BUT, it's nice to be near home even if for a short visit.

I know some people dislike coldsteel for certain reasons, but that SRK is a solid tool, Sounds like your running around near my old stomoing grounds (syrian border) i was in Rabiya for a year or so. take care

Right on. Good choice of blades too by the way. I think I forgot to mention that. I also forgot to mention that I also like to carry one Mora with me a lot of the time. Just really handy to have a scandi grind knife around.

Plain maybe but tried and tested for sure !

I can't imagine any survival situation in that terrain where those knives would serve you any less than any others......great choice !!!!

Hollowdweller, thankfully, no. I have seen some cutlery for sale in bazaars...nothing impressive, though, except for the U.S.-made stuff (mostly "pilfered" Benchmade itmes).

Madborderman07, I know Rabiyah well! Spent many hours overhead that place. When were you there?

ROCK6, always great to have a chance to be near home! Glad to hear you're getting that opportunity...I'll stay in touch.
