Would it work to have a semi-soundproofed shed for the generator? If you were discreet about the wiring to the house, the only tell-tale would be whatever you used for exhaust.

I was on a northern Indian reserve when the power was down for hours. No heat and light is serious at -30. I had one of those cheap little shaker flash lights to get around with, it worked well until power was restored.

A far more threatening experience was when my aim was poor in the middle of the night once and the boss woke up to find what she called my "pi** pond, by the toilet bowl. I cleaned it up immediately and she retracted the claws..........."Crack that whip"- Devo

I think preparedness in these everyday situations is very important.
