Wow those are pretty scathing. A shame really, as it's an aesthetically pleasing piece.
Yeah , it's really quite stunningly attractive ...but maybe not as functional as it is beautiful ?

Lots of expensive gear these days seems to be made mostly for the photogenic sex appeal . ;)

A huge waste of money,I'm embarrassed for U guys to carry such a inferior product. Spent too much time on axe,and zero time on handle. Small diameter, no grip, just a all around joke. I'm sure it's going too be a act of God to return. Extremely disappointing, for close to $200.00. Just stick to knives guys. Very frustrating, I was expecting so much more. Go to Home Depot an grab any carpenter hammer, and design handle off of that. I shouldn't have to redesign your axe. Just Sad!!

Head rocks...handle not thought out at all. It's painful and exhausting to use. The 1st reviews i read made this rock. Post purchase and practical implementation, i was quite disappointed and dug a lil deeper review wise. Found most folks agreed with my assessment. Unstable, difficult to manage, and extremely slippery. I wrapped the handle w paracord and the shock was still very uncomfortable and exhausting. Not a good throwing hatchet but may be good for self defense during the zombie apocalypses "if you can keep ahold of it "

Overall 14% One Star (lowest possible rating) . Usually poor rating for any Spyderco product .
Man, you surely know how to hurt a guy!!! Seriously though the reviewers are probably right. I bought it when they first came out and I don't intend to ever use it. I'm sure I paid under 200 bucks for it. When I first picked it up I thought what a skinny handle. But it is purdy. If I were to have to use one it would probably be one if these.View attachment 1975583View attachment 1975584

Hardcore Hammers makes me sad. Thy had countless experienced axe users and designers offer input on how they could fix their designs and they chose to ignore all of them and continue producing axes with pre-worn toes instead.

Like the hatchet's look. Shame it doesn't pass muster. I wonder, though if any of the reviews put it through an extended testing period? Some tools really do require some getting used to.

No dog in this fight, but I'd think since there are so many similar tools that don't require getting used to, it'd just be easier to get one of those - especially if the tool in question costs several hundred dollars.

I'd just go with a Vaughn & Bushnell riggers axe, but the spyderco is a bit more interesting looking and they have marketing behind them that sells them to the knife crowd so I can understand the choice.

I know you expected a better reception here, but this spyderco was designed by a knife company to sell to knife nuts, not by a tool company to be used by people who need that tool.

I think it is cool. We could critique many/most knives and other crap we all buy and don't really need, but they are cool too, because whatever makes us smile.

I think the Spyderco 'hawk, while not quite what I'd have designed personally if given the opportunity, looks great on paper, which is why I was so surprised that reviewers seem to think it fell short of the mark. Since most of the complaints hinge on the handle being slippery, wanting to turn in the hand, and transmitting too much shock, the easy solution seems to be just making your own handle. I bet it'd be quite a capable tool once the problem element was swapped out.

I don't understand the shade and unsolicited advice. I think it is cool. I also think we could critique many/most knives and other crap we all buy and don't really need, but they are cool too, because whatever makes us smile.

Yep, my hand is in the air, I don't have loads of new stuff but do have loads of what some would think is rusty old rubbish....... More than I can use but I do display some of it, my idea of ornaments 😁

I should apologize slightly @W for my first couple of post but calling anything "survival" I find really funny, I know it's fashionable but what else you gonna do? .... "I'm going in with my Perish hatchet, wish me luck" 😄

I have always used Estwing. I bought them for the Boy Scout troop that my Sons were in and they held up pretty well for a relatively inexpensive hatchet. 12 + years of literally hundreds of of 10 to 18 year olds abusing the crap out of them and me sharpening them and teaching others how to care for them as well. They did a pretty nice job of making a lot of fires and shelters.

I have yet to see a review of the Spyderco axe by a user that I have any faith in. Amazon reviews are usually used for comedy not for help in making decisions. People constantly complain about Becker knives factory handle scales being slippery but I have used them in snow, sleet, rain and all temperatures without thinking that so I don't really think they are likely correct. I would like to see a real review but the age of the item and cost will probably prevent that from ever happening.

I forget where I saw it but one of the first reviews I saw of it was from someone pretty well versed in axes and their complaints were basically the same. It was ages ago, though, so I can't recall who it was.

What's with the knob thing on the back? 😁

I get what they were going for with it, though I wouldn't have designed it like that. They were trying to maximize the size of the striking face and depth of the poll without it being overly heavy. But it's a bit much compared to a classic flared or waisted octagonal.

I'm thinking Spyderco should probe 42 for a hatchet head design. 😝
