I know this is not terribly important in the big scheme of things, but is a silver lining on a dark cloud. This last Monday we had a break-in. We think it was kids, based on what they took, a PlayStation, games, Blu-Ray, some movies, digital camera, and some clothes. They also did considerable damaged to the front door and wall. Thank God they did not find anything irreplaceable, like my wife's jewelry or my knife collection, shotgun, airgun, etc. It would have been a drag combing pawnshops for knifes you can't get anymore like my HI Foxy Folly by Bura, Original Becker Necker, or Cold Steel Carbon V Trail Guide, SRK, or Master Hunter.

Dealing with this I realized that the value of my knives and camping/survival equipment amounts to a lot more than the value of some of the electronics we use the most. Am I the only one?

No you are not . They can have my tv,hell, I might not even buy another one . My guns knives bullets and gear are my pride and joy toys

I only own two knives, and they're both Moras.
I am sorry to hear about your break-in, and I hope they catch the punks.

no, my blade collection too is hella pricy.

however any thief entering my house will soon find out I do not call the Police.

A safe might not be a bad idea. If you can't afford one, a locking steel cabinet lagged to the floor is way better than nothing.

I hate to hear about "trash" breaking into your home. On the bright side no one was injured and your most valuable possessions were left alone. Scum broke into my home many years ago and I got very few things back. I've never tried to figure the value of all of my knives but I'm sure the number would be higher than my TV, stereo, and computer. Many of my knives have more than a monetary value.

Same here.

You're right. I just gave away one of the Moras.

My neighbor got hit a couple of years ago. This happened in about a one-hour interval in which my wife and I ran to the grocery store. The crooks had been watching to see when the coast was clear. When we got back to the house, cops were everywhere.

Another neighbor had responded to her dog barking, had seen someone crawling into a window, and had called the cops. The thieves were long gone when the cops arrived. Luckily, there was a smart detective in our area who knew that a B&E perp had just gotten out of jail and lived nearby. The detective ordered a police stop at the thief's house, and they caught the guy crawling out of a back window, trying to get away. They later got his son and a girl, both accomplices. All my neighbor's stuff, with the exception of a Playstation, was still sitting in the thief's car. My neighbor was lucky.

Pretty soon thereafter, just about everyone on the street got alarm systems installed if they didn't already have them.

I had a couple Busse's and some firearms stolen from my place a few years ago while I was visiting Italy. I live in a much better place now.

My knife collection is my most valuable possession. It easily outcosts everything I own. A lot of knives are irreplaceable. This is the main reason I will never put them on display or mention to someone details about them. Glad to hear you didn't lose yours and I hope they get the perps :grumpy:

They got into my truck a few years ago, stole a half dozen knives, binoculars , and my Nikes. They left my expensive rod and reels and tackle boxes.

Thank you. I don't know if they'll get them, but the police has the serial number of the Blu-Ray player. If the burglars pawn it, the police will get it, and possibly the burglars too.

Glad to hear nobody was hurt and your knives weren't taken.

I ended up buying a fire-resistant safe when we were almost evacuated a couple of years ago due to flooding. I would have had to leave my knives and other valuables for some time, and they may have been under water. Now I have my best knives in a Pelican box in the safe; hopefully that would protect them from water damage from fire hoses or flooding.

Sucks for sure but glad your knives are safe.
Brings up a good point,
check into "replacement value" on your insurance.
not much more cost, but what it does is
"that was a 50 year old couch, worth only 6 bucks"
vs
"that was an antique couch and replacement is 2000"

You're right. I just gave away one of the Moras.

You still rehabbing rabid wolves at you home?
btw, your poisonous snake handlers license is valid till 2014

Preacher, I'm glad to hear no one was hurt, other then maybe feelings/emotions.... Sounds to me like some dope heads broke in, maybe was scared off by a neighbors car or something..If you have teenage kids it may have even been one of their so called friends. It seems to me they knew what they wanted, you say they stole clothes?? are these clothes trendy??

If so, its someone you know, guaranteed..

No random burglar would rummage through clothes and not bother to rummage for jewelry, guns or other valuable items..

In my mind at this point, everyone's a suspect... But I'll bet you anything its someone you know..

Good luck I hope they get caught to say the least..

Glad you came out ok on this one.

I keep all my guns, knives, the wife's jewelry and papers in one of 4 large safes. They are bolted to the wall, and slab.

My knives are valuable to me than my TV, or dvd, or whatever.

I think you have me confused with PFR. Of course, given my god-like stature, I can see how one might make that mistake.
