My Sway Back Jack helped save a man today!!!

Always carry a knife, someday it may save someones life
Great story

we all carry a knife of some description at work and there is a cheapo lino knife in the box(used to used for windscreen removal not so much now days).

Excellent story. We just can not underestimate our smaller knives.
I usually carry a Spyderco Atlantic will full serrations in my first aid kit. I am always afraid that if I need to cut rope, a seat belt or restrictive clothing my plain edge Endura will not like it, or I will cut the person I am trying to give aid to. The rounded point on the Atlantic gives me some comfort in that regard.
That being said, I have never used it yet.

Man, what a story. There is no way in heck I will ever get up in a tree with a chain saw. And maybe now the other members of your F.D. will carry a knife.

OK, but the offer stands. Just say the word. I can think of three right now (S&W and two Gerbers) that are pretty much taking up space. You should throw your address up and see how many knives you get. I bet you'd be surprised. :)

Any news on the survivor? Sounds like a bad injury.

I bought a chainsaw last year (husqvarna 346XP). Always wear chaps and full helmet because I know my limitations. Have over 200 hours on it as a volunteer after a series of tornados touched down nearby. I was surprised at how sharp the chains are. They will easily slice skin when the saw is off.

Thanks Guys,

I havent heard about the victim. hardly ever do. They will probably tell us at our next drill. LKJW I will contact you about the knives. That is very generous. Thanks again!

Gotcha brother. My daughter is so excited (loves firefighters...wants to be one). Got a S&W, Gerber, Kershaw Chive, Schrade (chinese), and cheapo orange handle that is actually a decent knife (all one hand openers). Will be cleaning them, oiling and sharpening over the next day or so and then they're on there way to you.

Happy to do it. And my wife will be happy to get a few knives out of the house. LOL

Thanks Guys,

Shameful that your fire guys (regardless of paid or vol) didn't have a knife in their gear.

I generally carry a Leek on duty and now a peanut off duty. I don't really like the Leek for EDC, but I figure if I'm going to need a one handed opener, it's more likely going to happen at work.

Do you guys have 2% money in your budget? Might be something to look into. S&W rescue knives are serviceable and are fairly cheap.

Just a quick update. The victim is going to be fine, he had a lot of stitches but will be ok. Also, Dan, aka LKJW was very generous and donated four one hand opening knives to our fire dept. He requested only that I show him pics of the knives at their new homes. So, in keeping with our agreement, I am posting the pics here. Sorry about the quality, they are cell pics.
These are the four knives that Dan gave us. You can also see the hero, my SBJ, and also the dud, my trapper! :D

The Camo knife went to Engine 2. (Notice the little SBJ on the hose behind the larger knife) Yes the truck is labeled Engine 1 but it is now 2!

And finally, the best knife of all of them is a Gerber Spring assist, it has found a temporary home in my gear until I can part with it and I will probably give it to the chief since I think he still doesn't carry a knife!!

Thanks again to Dan for the great knives! :D It truly was a wonderful gesture and the guys really appreciated them. They are all super sharp and will see lots of use.
Sorry for all of the nontraditional pics.
Thanks again!

My goodness... not to take away from your efforts, but I have to say I absolutely laughed my butt off at your description.

OK; you drive up the scene, and there is a profusely bleeding man hanging in a tree with a running chainsaw tied to him. Wow. That is quite a picture, literally one of life and death.

But when you are asked for a knife, your TRUE knifenuttery comes out. Which blade? (Tick, tick, tick....) You can't decide because you don't want to intentionally hand someone a dull knife. What would they think of your choice of knife? Would they think you didn't know how to sharpen? How embarrassing could this get?

Tick... tick... tick...

Now you weigh the pros and cons of a smaller sharp blade vs. a larger dull blade. Tick... tick... tick...

Well, it would be too embarrassing to hand over a dull knife (after all, you are the knife guy, right?) to a fellow worker, so you hand over the sharp knife to cut that teeny sized rope.

And you... you don't understand why your fellow workers saw any type of hesitation. They needed a knife; any knife. Tick... tick... tick...

Finally, a decision is made. The right knife is sent up, and a life is saved. *whew* Thankfully the SBJ had a fresh edge! That poor SOB might still up there!

I am still chuckling. Told as only a fellow blade lover could tell it, and the humor of it appreciated only as it could be a fellow blade lover.

Loved the story, and your concern of picking the right tool to cut a small rope.

Seriously, good on you and yours for the rescue.

Robert

It's like me in the morning trying to figure out which knife to carry haha. But I respect you for your service to your community and in saving the lives of individuals there. Take care and keep up the knife carry :)

Wow, man. You really went above and beyond with the pics. My daughter is gonna be so stoked. She wants to be a firefighter among other things. ;) Heck, I'm stoked. Thanks brother. Glad those knives are gonna get some use. (Good call keeping the Gerber) ;)
