I never carry my Tak because its just to heavy and the sheath sucks. I am thinking of taking the handles off and wrapping it in para cord. What do you guys think? will it help the weight?

Not much. Most of the weight comes from the thick slab of steel used. It will save some weight, but not enough to make up for the performance loss of not having a handle.

Agreed. One thing you might try is contouring the slabs. You would save a very small amount of weight and you could make the knife fit your hand better. I had a TAK and hated the thick square slabs and thick uneven grind. With a little work you may be able to make a knife that you'll really use.

If you do not like the scales it is Micarta and can be sanded down to fit your hands but wear a resperator, micarta is messy / dusty...

I love my TAK, Thats the knife I find myself going for everytime I go outside :p

My hands are a little large so it fits me well !

if you can't find someone that makes aftermarket sheaths, they're are a few great sheathmakers who can make you a leather or kydex sheath for a reasonable price.
:D

Try leatherface, Leatherman, or Ilbruche.

I thought the exact same thing and delt with it untill i saw a thread about emergency sheaths and got the idea to make my own. Here is my post from that thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showpost.php?p=5252957&postcount=35

This works great for me because i just keep it in a pack anyway, you may be able to make some modifications or just use this as a stepping stone and make one that is suitable for wearing on your person.

Best of luck.

Wow enix, great Idea! I think ill make my own sheath for it. I have some good thick leather I could try and use but that pvc Idea looks pretty cool. I may do both. I love my TAK and when im in the woods, that knife gives me plenty peace of mind. Thanks for the Idea guys.

John Larsen sent me his TAK to look at -- he had drilled holes carefully in the tang to skeletonize it, and the diifference in weight and handling was amazing. The blance changed and made it even more swift than before.

Wear a respirator with toxic gas filters if you're using a belt grinder....hot Micarta gives off formaldehyde and phenol fumes, as well as the toxic grinding dust. If you can smell the "stink" of it when grinding it, you're taking in toxic gas. Be careful.
