My third knife....I gave it away

Hi Everyone

Thank you for all those that continue to support the new guys. This is my third knife and my first hidden tang. I made it for a good friend and hunting buddy that is a policeman. I had drawn several designs and asked him which one he liked best. From there, I did not tell him I was going to make the knife for his birthday. While making the knife, he took me bowhunting for the first time. I found a mule deer shed that day and thought it was appropriate for his knife. I had not planned on using antler as it is a little difficult compared to using a block of wood. The red stripe in the guard represents his uniform stripes and the antler was dyed to represent his uniform color. I also shaped the frontal profile of the guard to look like a shield. Though the knife is not perfect, I am proud to give it to him.

5/32" 1095 with hamon
1084 steel guard
dyed mule deer antler handle
6 3/4" from tip to guard

Comments and critique are welcomed.

*Edit:* I made a sheath for this knife and I didn't like the proportion to the handle. The finish looked poor too, so I made a different style. The second is a cross draw meant to be worn left of center and drawn right handed. Tell me what you think.

Thanks

Brett

The blade and handle work looks great but I think the handle shape might be somewhat limiting. You are off to a great start.

Wow looks great. I am very soon to be starting my (First) knife project and I can only hope my third looks even close to that good.

Lookin' good Hoss. Keep it up.

My number 3 looked pretty sad. But then again my number 400-ish doesn't look much better.

Please continue to share your achievements.

I was going to say I didn't like the handle but the meaning overrides the form. It's a very nice knife ... but especially so for a third effort. Your friend will be very pleased.

That is an excellent looking blade Brett. Very nice.
And as a LEO with a birthday this month, I want to personally state what a great idea it is for a gift and encourage as much such activity as I can! Hah!

noice! how did you do the red stripe? is the guard 2 pieces with a red piece in between?

Thank you for the feedback everyone. Yes, the guard is two pieces of steel with a red spacer. I drilled two holes through the spacer and the steel closest to the handle. The front piece is only drilled part way. I used alignment pins to hold it all together. I was originally going to cold blue the guard steel, so the alignment pins would have allowed me to fit and finish the guard off the knife and then put it all back on with the same fit.

I am glad you didn't blue the guard. I think you would have lost the red contrast had you done so.

I absolutely go gonzo for any knife that has sentimental appeal and symbolism. It makes it all that more appealing when they look that good.

Cheers.

Excellent job!

Sure, the handle isn't a perfect shape for a knife....but that matters not. Nature makes very few things perfect for any purpose besides what Nature intended it to be originally.

It is a very nice gift, which I am sure he was thrilled to get.

Holey mother of beauty! What a great thing to do for a friend. I love the blade design and I am always a sucker for a stag handle. That is a great knife for your third or 300th

Very nice.

he is going to love it.
