My thoughts on "rock pattern" customizations on knives.

I don’t think he invented it. Tops knives has been doing this pattern for as long as I can remember.

These Tops Trackers are huge with the Bushcraft crowd. Goofy looking but surprisingly very functional and solid as hell.

A bit expensive for me, but the one I tried was kinda cool. I liked the feel of the grip but it does feel better than it looks IMO...

I’ve seen a few companies doing them and they come in various sizes. They were popularized by that movie, the hunted or something. They were pretty popular for a while there.

This is MTech’s cheap version of the knife. Looks pretty different but it apparently is also called the Tracker.

Rock patterned blade? Nope.

Rock patterned scale? I don't think it looks bad but I've never held one either. Comfort in the hand > looks. This is a situation where I wouldn't buy it over the internet w/o handling it first.

I like the pattern itself, definitely popular, but from an in hand perspective, i wonder how comfortable it would be as a working tool. Of course most of these knives aren't hard use tools per se.

As long as the person/company doing the pattern does it right, they are quite comfortable and secure in hand. The rock pattern isn't usually very aggressive, so there aren't a lot of sharp edges. When I do it I also slightly round the outer edges so you don't have a sharp spine in hand. The pattern helps to contour the scale a bit instead of just a flat smooth surface, so it is great for a working knife.

the hunted. hahahah. sorry I don't know how to quote. I think tommy lee ran down a car on foot in that one. I remember liking the knives, recommending to friends we watch it, and realizing how objectively bad it was while watching it again. that movie and a gimmicky aesthetic are perfect for each other.

I don't want to own or use the look, but I like seeing some art pieces done up in it

I have a Maxace Corvus with it and the knife is extremely comfortable in hand.

Don't like em. I feel they get in the way of disassembly and maintenance and can somehow lead to a problem. I have one scalloped handle (rock patterned) specimen and it's nothing special. On the upshot at least someone was making a serious effort at remedying poor ergos, Becker Knives I'm looking at U

I have nothing like this now, but I admit I'm seriously considering getting a knife with a rock pattern handle. The Olamic Busker comes with endless options. Here's a handle shape I may order, with or without the weight-saving holes. I still may chicken out and get a more conventional handle. I know some will consider these to be unusual, to say the least. Any thoughts?

I like it, looks more interesting than just plain flat untextured Ti. To each their own. You're entitled to your opionion. Some people like wood scales, some like anodized slabs or Ti, some like texture, some like inlays. Plenty of stuff to fill every niche.
I actually like the look of this one. Some of the more symmetrical scallops I don't care for.

I like symmetrical styles. But a really well done rock pattern on a fixed blade is nice and comfortable. As long as the grooves are shallow enough not to be sharp. Adds grip and comfort. I like it. But i have seen some awful ones. Super sharp, deep uncomfortable.
