A lot of wisdom here with good insight to the knife community.
A slow economy like we are seeing does not have to be the down fall of a Knifemaker. As Jerry points out, he has seen the best years ever during this slow economy. What I suspect is Jerry and the other makers experiencing growth, are working on new opportunities that are available. Instead of relying on the same collectors over and over they are expanding to new market areas. This is good for all of us and expands the custom knife customer base. I feel like the new format small shows actually help larger shows in the long term by creating new knife collectors. Better educated collectors that will be here for a long time.
A maker relying on knife income as a living has to be aware of short term benefits. Like which shows provide sales. But he also should be aware of the long term benefits, like which shows provide new qualified contacts. For a maker relying on knife income both are very important.
Jerry and Josh are also pointing out how important it is to take care of your existing collectors. These interactive small shows are proving a great way to do that.
Keep up the good work guys and if every maker will do a little something to bring in a few new customers and take care of their collectors we will all benefit.
