(I posted this at Spyderco.com but thought I should put it here too.)
Why do I carry Spyderco products? There is probably an infinite number of other knife designs and brands that are more suited to what I want out of a knife or to what I use a knife for.
I could easily carry another knife to work, and in my profession, as I've said time and time again, my life or the life of my shipmates could depend on quick thinking and a quicker knife. I could also probably find a better knife suited for the work I expect from it, a lot of people tell me to consider a fixed blade, but I trust Spyderco, I've NEVER had one fail when I needed it to perform, and as such I trust my life to Spyderco.
I'm not military or law enforcement or any other high speed profession. I am a working man, and a knife is a tool, an important tool to me. I need a fast opening knife, one that stays sharp for a reasonable amount of time, not forever, but usually until I can get on land again and sharpen it. It has to be easy to resharpen if it is dead dull. It needs to be fast to deploy and open, and it needs to be able to cut a varied nature of materials, as well as do things a knife usually isn't designed for. I probably will never send a Spyderco knife to W&R if it breaks, because it will probably be my own fault.
However, it is comforting to know that should I have to send one in, I can rest assured that Sal, Kristi, and all of the good people at Spyderco (none of whom I've met personally by the way) will take top notch care of me and my problem, and if not, they will always resolve it in a manner that leaves little to be desired.
Name me ten, no, even three other corporations that take as much of an interest in the end line user or collector of their product? Sal not only accomodates the users of his knives but also the collector. That is a heavy burden, to consider the person who buys a knife for his or her job and is looking for affordability, as well as the person buying a knife for an investment or collection, and putting out a line of products that meets the needs of both.
Then we have this forum. What other company forums are as friendly as this one? There are a few that will ban you just for mentioning a bad experience with one of their knives. Here, Sal and crew takes the good experiences and the bad and uses them to continuosly improve their product.
Honesty and integrity is a dying trait in business today and it is nice to know that there is still a company out there that actually cares about the guy buying their product with his hard earned money, than about the almighty dollar itself. Sure there are some s that I wish I could afford to buy and use but can't justify spending the dough but for my price range, I haven't been dissatisfied yet.
Spyderco might not be the best knives on the market for certain jobs, but they certainly make the best effort to be. What more can you ask? Me? A flat ground h-1 heavy duty marine folder . (every time I begin to draw up a design for a knife it has features!)
Other than that, if you see me on a boat, using another brand of knife, rest assured there is a Spyderco or three clipped somewhere on my person. And when the s*** hits the fan, that's the knife I'm reaching for.
In conclusion, I want to thank Sal and Spyderco for their efforts. If I end up with this new job, one that involves some travelling, I have to pack light, and will only have a few knives, you can bet your a** that they are going to be Spydercos.
