My Traditional-Slipjoints Vs SAKs Dilema

Pocketknife said:
Up until a couple of years ago, I used to carry just one pocketknife, and it was usually a Swiss Army Knife, but not always. I also like to carry regular pocketknives (either a locking, or a "slipjoint").

Now, I have a Leatherman Micra on my keychain, so there's my scissors, screwdrivers, tweezers, etc. But, I still want a KNIFE, and I like to have a tough locking one, and I also usually carry, out of habit, a SAK. So that's three:

SAK in my pocket (either the small one or the larger, cocobolo-handled one):

Schrade lockback in pouch, on my belt:

Hey Pocketknife great Canucks Vic..I can tell its been well used(I am a Canuck Fan also).
I love my Alox Sak's to be sure but over the last while I usually carry a small slip joint, either a Case or Schrade........they fit nicely in my watch pocket of my jeans an just seem to have Soul for want of a better word......connection to the past I suppose.........I know Grandpa always carried a SlipJoint and that may also be a influence.

I'm rarely ever without a traditional slipjoint of somekind, but I'm never without a multitool. For doing any kind of substantial utility work, they are better than SAK's. My solution has been to carry 3 tools on a daily basis.

1. Good SJ for general cutting and slicing chores.

2. Mulitool of your choice for utility and dirty jobs where edge damage can occur.

3. Medium sized, 4-4 1/2 inch, locking blade folder for heavier cutting jobs. This is either a lockback or one hander, depending on my whim.

I like and carry SAK's on a regular basis, ecspecially for camping/hunting use(love that saw!), but for everyday use, my 3 tool combo has proven difficult to improve on.

Winter: I carry more stuff ( a SAK, slippy, mini flash light,) because I have more pockets.
summer: I wear shorts alot and choose only one knife for the day.::confused: Since there is more daylight hours the flash light goes bye bye too.

I agree with SteveKT,

The generations before us had more agriculture/farm based employment where a stockman or similar knife would suffice. Today, most people work in warehouses, factories, and offices where the tools of a SAK will more likey be utilized.

Maybe carrying around a traditional stockman is just another way of resisting change and holding on to the past?

I think that our grandfathers used the stockman and other traditionals because that is what worked for them--but I also think that their world was'nt filled with so many screws.

For me, the SAK can't be beat.

But I still carry a one-hand-pocket-clip-locking-folder in addition to my SAK.

Peace,
Allen.
