My Treasure Haul from the Fall Gathering

Well if I find a Volkswagen key I'll make copies and send it with every M-18 from here after. I'm going to CVS after work to buy vaseline, sports wrap, Advil/Tylenol and Benedryl. I know that sounds like party favors, but I'm really stocking up my med kit, thanks Doc!

I'm hoping to give that talk a few more times and to be able to demonstrate some of the stuff a little better. It can be hard to visualize everything I was talking about. Probably the best thing to do is for me to come back to Ethan's Spring Gathering and give a few talks with demo sessions and lab sessions. We just didn't have enough time and too much of a good subject can bore the piss out of people. But if you interspersed my medicine talks with fire talks, chopping contests, chili feeds and beer drinking, you might have something.

Yeah, see we need you at the Spring gathering, so you have to attend. I have plenty of military medical training, but honestly have never had much on the "lesser" wound type stuff. I learned a lot.

If the next spring gathering is anything like the last spring gathering I'm pretty sure I can volunteer to be a demonstrator. I sliced my thumb up pretty good on my convexed 14 out there.

I would like to compare what they taught you in the military about knife and gun club medicine to what I learned in the civilian world. They are usually similar but the military has it's own demands and ideas based on the conditions encountered by men in the field.

Anytime

He still had 2 of the Yuma's Saturday evening -- the red handled and one other.

Todd and I worked out a deal. If the red handled Yuma came back to Indiana with him, I'd take it off his hands. That makes my 5th. (and 2nd my wife knows about) So, sorry gentlemen, it's off the table.

I went with the intention of purchasing a Yuma off of ole Todd, but after getting ahold of the ones up for grabs, none felt just right in my hand. I decided to check out the Mogwai though and found one right off the bat!

Home safely now - glad to see your wife actually has her own knife now - the pink one of course... And I thought your medical talk was one of the true highlights of the weekend.

Great to meet you both!

Great to meet you as well! The companion to her pink handled knife is now entering my Jumbo Versapack as an EDC.

I put up the first video out of the gathering. I am pretty sure I would get dinged if I posted it in the Becker forum so I'll just link to it.

Enjoy! There is some pretty epic chopping in the video. Brad Pitt makes an appearance as well, for the lady Beckerheads.

Wow. Thanks for the bacon pics, now I'm hungry! Also thank you for your informative speach. I like Murph also upgraded my packs with mentioned supplies. Lastly, my gratitude cannot be expressed enough for the intrest and the kind words, advice, and encouragement in my knifemaking. I hope all that you purchased from me exceeds your expectations. I know by what you do with your expeditions if they meet them than I am doing my job correctly, and the invite to my shop still stands. Contact me sometime and we can set something up. Consider your welcome anytime, besides, I need to pic your brain on the forge you built. (I've been watching your youtube vids)

I'll get out there sometime this winter when no one else will go outside with me. I have a lot of questions to ask you about your shop etc. The one thing I would improve on the forge is to make it out of a bigger pipe. Also I would probably use a MUCH larger propane source. Using the little tanks for the grill you'll find that they freeze up. I'm planning on building a Mark II this winter when I am stuck indoors. After I get my new garage built I think I am going to buy a real forge. I am also considering buying one of those autohammer things to help me forge things quicker and with less wear and tear on my hands. I think I could really make some cool stuff in the hand-forged knife realm. I'd also like to be able to duplicate my parang and parang #2 a little easier.

you should check into a treadle hammer -- foot powered metal pounding goodness!

let me guess -- that translates into "when are you coming up so we can expand the shop and build one of these?"
doesn't it? :D

More or less. I have to get my new garage built first. I like those big hammer forges that they are using at GB. Looks like something like this would work for the average Iowa guy forging stuff at home.

Hey Doc, here is a link that you might find useful. Great bunch of guys and they can put you on to a good used trip hammer for sure. I've been to several "hammer ins" and they always have one or two for sale.

Totally going to bogart your thread. Here is a pic of the knives I got this time around.

The small one is a T.M. Hunt Mogwai, and the other is a very, very cool knife given to my by 1066vic. I don't know much of the story behind it, but I do know it is a WW2 Collins Machete that was broken, then rehandled into quite possibly my current favorite knife. This thing is just plain awesome, and I bout crapped myself when Erik threw it to me and told me it was mine. I had been drooling over it all weekend and had some very elaborate plans to purchase and similarly handle a machete on my own. Erik, a tip of the hat to you good sir.

I also got, due to the graciousness of AIG, a buttload of rubber tubing and orange paracord, as well as a lovely Beckerhead hat from the boss Ethan.
