I have always enjoyed going into old & abandoned buildings =) Yesterday I drove to Mansfield, Ohio to attend a tour of the facility. Mansfield Reformatory is beautiful. . . . even though it was VERY run down and falling apart, you can still see the beauty in the building. Even before the Reformatory existed, the land that it was to stand on had already seen its share of action. During the Civil War, Union forces used the area as a training camp to prepare soldiers for battle.

Architect Levi T. Scofield designed the prison to resemble the old world castles in Germany. He designed Mansfield Reformatory in 1886 with the hopes that the institution would offer a spiritual uplift to the boys who were sent there for reform.

Being uplifted was the LAST thing on my mind driving to the front entrance. It was dark when I arrived so I could not take a good picture but here is a picture that was taken by someone else, just to give you an idea of what the building looks like. This is only a small portion of the building.

Once you walk in (which was a really creepy walk LOL), there is a gift shop to your left and a Mansfield Museum to your right. In the museum, there is a glass case full of old prison shanks that were confiscated during their years of operation. They were made of toothbrushes and metal forks. . . .Metal forks were probably not the best idea

There was an electric chair. . . .

I love the movie “Shawshank Redemption”. . . That movie is probably one of the reasons I wanted to go to Mansfield in the first place. The movie stars Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, James Whitmore and Bob Gunton. If you have not seen this movie, I would highly recommend it!

In the museum, there is an area that is dedicated to the movies that were filmed there in the past. In this picture, there is a glass case filled with signed pictures from the Shawshank cast and movie props they left behind.

In the movie, there is a character named “Brooks” who is played by James Whitmore.

Picture signed by James Whitmore. . .

There is a scene in the movie where Brooks signs “Brooks was here” in a wall. “Red”, who was played by Morgan Freeman, also signs the wall.

Tim Robbins, who plays “Andy Dufresne”, escapes Shawshank prison through a tunnel in the wall that he kept hidden with a poster. Here is the tunnel they used in the movie. . .

Nothing prepares you for the immense size and scale of the prison. Considered to have the largest free-standing steel cell block in the world, the prison’s 6 levels of imposing cells tower over you. It is quite intimidating, to say the least. Here is a couple of pictures I took while walking around. . .

They let us walk around by ourselves after they gave us the inital tour. Lights were off. . . .

Don't look down. . . . .

The tour guides told us this chair likes to move on its own. . . .They leave it in one place and it ends up in another. They think it is other volunteers playing tricks on each other. . . I choose to believe them :D

Does anyone else like to go into creepy buildings at night? Hopefully I am not the ONLY one :) If by chance there IS a couple of you out there, feel free to post any pics

I just wanted to share my pictures and experience with you guys!

Enjoy!

wow! looks like an awsome tour. I would love to see it in person. I think historical sights are very cool. great pics. Brave woman.

Great pics Pokey !!! I grew up living in a place that many people died (peacefully) in and as an adult I have spent more than my share of nights in places that freak many out.... including ME a couple of times. Prisons are full of bad juju in my opinion and sometimes it can be almost palitable !!! Wandering around a condemed man's cell (the trapdoor being right outside it) alone and in the middle of the night sure can make the hair stand up on the back of one's neck..!!!!!!!!

Did you do the whole night long stay? They used to have it where you could rent it for the night and you were left free to roam around. Maybe it's too run down now.
There are a few cool "creepy" places around here.

Sweet tour. Shawshank is one of my favorite movies.

I have toured a really old prison in Montana (I believe), that was pretty gnarly. During one prison riot, instead of going in and clearing the prisoners, they simply fired a Bazooka into the room, from the yard, killing a group of inmates. There were a set of "cells" out in the yard called The Box. They were 3x3x3 if I remember correctly, with a sheet metal roof. They would put inmates stuffed in them in the sun to bake them. They could not stretch out, stand, or lay down.

Pontiac and Dwight prisons are old but still in use. The county's poor farm was gone decades ago, but the cemetery remains. I like cruising through some of the older plots at night. It's a bummer that most of the old civil war era grave markers are gone.

This is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I'm jealous of you for going, but I'm elated that you had the chance to experience it. The pictures are great, I'm sure they do no justice to actually seeing it for yourself.

Wow... what a cool place!

I don't understand why they don't still use it.

If all jails were like that, we'd have far less crime!

.

Cool thread, I would love to spend an evening there with some A/V equipment.
I'll bet you would get a lot of unexplained sounds and maybe even catch something on video.

Wow, that is pretty cool, very cool pics

I love the Shawshank Redemption too, such a great movie.

If you like to see old run down spooky buildings I'll post some pictures of the meth houses close to me. I'd say that you could probably see a ghost in them but in reality it's probably just a ghost like meth head.

Not that I've ever had insomnia and watched SciFi at 4am, but I think Ghost Hunters has been there :o

Funny that a place designed to spiritually uplift troubled youth would have an electric chair.

I want to see if I can rent that place for a weekend. That would make for an awesome party venue.

All sorts of fun can be had with doses of electricity :D

And do I detect a hint at a traveling trough show? :D

That would be fun. We could lock everyone in cells and then open all the door and make you search the prison for the knives.
