I have always enjoyed going into old & abandoned buildings =) Yesterday I drove to Mansfield, Ohio to attend a tour of the facility. Mansfield Reformatory is beautiful. . . . even though it was VERY run down and falling apart, you can still see the beauty in the building. Even before the Reformatory existed, the land that it was to stand on had already seen its share of action. During the Civil War, Union forces used the area as a training camp to prepare soldiers for battle.
Architect Levi T. Scofield designed the prison to resemble the old world castles in Germany. He designed Mansfield Reformatory in 1886 with the hopes that the institution would offer a spiritual uplift to the boys who were sent there for reform.
Being uplifted was the LAST thing on my mind driving to the front entrance. It was dark when I arrived so I could not take a good picture but here is a picture that was taken by someone else, just to give you an idea of what the building looks like. This is only a small portion of the building.
Once you walk in (which was a really creepy walk LOL), there is a gift shop to your left and a Mansfield Museum to your right. In the museum, there is a glass case full of old prison shanks that were confiscated during their years of operation. They were made of toothbrushes and metal forks. . . .Metal forks were probably not the best idea
There was an electric chair. . . .
I love the movie Shawshank Redemption. . . That movie is probably one of the reasons I wanted to go to Mansfield in the first place. The movie stars Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, James Whitmore and Bob Gunton. If you have not seen this movie, I would highly recommend it!
In the museum, there is an area that is dedicated to the movies that were filmed there in the past. In this picture, there is a glass case filled with signed pictures from the Shawshank cast and movie props they left behind.
In the movie, there is a character named Brooks who is played by James Whitmore.
Picture signed by James Whitmore. . .
There is a scene in the movie where Brooks signs Brooks was here in a wall. Red, who was played by Morgan Freeman, also signs the wall.
Tim Robbins, who plays Andy Dufresne, escapes Shawshank prison through a tunnel in the wall that he kept hidden with a poster. Here is the tunnel they used in the movie. . .
Nothing prepares you for the immense size and scale of the prison. Considered to have the largest free-standing steel cell block in the world, the prisons 6 levels of imposing cells tower over you. It is quite intimidating, to say the least. Here is a couple of pictures I took while walking around. . .
They let us walk around by ourselves after they gave us the inital tour. Lights were off. . . .
Don't look down. . . . .
The tour guides told us this chair likes to move on its own. . . .They leave it in one place and it ends up in another. They think it is other volunteers playing tricks on each other. . . I choose to believe them
Does anyone else like to go into creepy buildings at night? Hopefully I am not the ONLY one
If by chance there IS a couple of you out there, feel free to post any pics
I just wanted to share my pictures and experience with you guys!
Enjoy!
