My try at making micarta scales

OK here are a couple pix of what I've got right now. I was hoping that it would be a bit wider so I could make it for the BK2, and since it slipped yesterday when I was clamping it down I now have less material to work with. So I think I'm gonna make scales for the ESKabar now. I will have a lot of extra material left over from this slab that I made so I might make a couple extra and contest 'em away on here. Who knows I still have some work ahead of me with this first set.

Here are the pictures I took so fat today Derek.

I think this might look pretty cool from what I can see right now.

So since like I said I didn't have enough material to make scales for the BK2 here are the pictures of what I did.

I'm not entirely done with it. I'm planning on cutting holes for the ring or butt or the handle, and I need to get some finer sand paper. I sanded the scales all by hand, and ya it did take a while to do it. I'm not entirely sold on the brass screws. I do have some SS ones, and I'm thinking that I need to recess them into the scales.

Overall I like what I've done so far, and I'll keep you guys up to date on my progress with them.

Yeah, I say recess em. Coming along nicely though.

Man, make sure you're wearing a dust mask or something when you're cutting and sanding. Once that resin dust gets in your lungs, it's there to stay. :thumbdn:

It looks like you ended up with some good solid material though.

Here is what I think is my finished product. I had some time in the shop today so along with stripping the 2 I also drilled the hole for the 14's scales, and contoured it a little more. Now we can see a little more grain in the scales.

smoking deal crazy.... looks awesome and love the smell:p

I do the same exact thing, I have many scales waiting for some knife action my only problem at the moment is finding SCREWS !!!!! at a reasonable rate as I want to buy 50-100..

If you buff them out they'll be even sweeter....

I've heard once before that the name 'Micarta' is actually a CR, so technically other knife manufacturers are not suppose to use that name.. of course I'm probably wrong and talking out of the side of my neck..

Wow, that looks awesome! What did you use to cut out the hole and how to line them up? What tool did you use to contour? Very nice job:thumbup:

Thanks!! I should try polishing it and see how that goes. Maybe I should change my title to 'micarta style scales' or 'resin and fabric layered scales' ;)

Nice work, man! The contours look very comfortable. How does it feel in-hand?

Thanks!!! It feels pretty good. Though I think I might take off a little more on the top and bottom edges of it and see how that goes.

Thanks!!! I used a 4 in 1 file that has the wood rasp and bastard files on it in flat and half round. I used a 5/8" flat blade drill bit. It actually fits rather well in there. I left one scale on the handle drilled it out then put the other one back on and drilled it.
