After 6 months' probationary membership at my rifle club.

After 8 weeks' bureaucracy and a security check at my home.

After spending far too much money:

...My Sako Finnfire Varmint in .22 Long Rifle!

She's a beauty from her Harris bipod to her SAK sound moderator; from her Leupold Vari-X III 4.5 - 14 x 50mm telescopic sight to her Doskocil rifle case.

First target, first day, 100 yards. Considering that I was getting used to the trigger, experimenting with ammo, and that the wind was gusting to over 40mph, I'm very happy. Ammo was (mainly) Winchester yellow box.

She wants to shoot sub-minute of angle, and next time out I'm going to be of more help to her.

I'm a happy bunny and - if I can find a friendly farmer - I'm eventually going to make a lot of other bunnies unhappy!

:D

Here’s my second new toy:

2008_1109Rem_700_SPS0006.jpg

It’s a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308" Winchester.

2008_1109Rem_700_SPS0008.jpg

The ‘scope is an early Schmidt & Bender Police Marksman II in 3-12 x 50mm

It has a Mil-Dot reticle (and additional ranging stadia lines in “Minute of Osama bin Laden”) in 28 Minute of Angle Accuracy International mounts.

The base is a one-piece Warne Picatinny unit.

The ‘scope was built in 1998 for Accuracy International, and is fitted with Bullet Drop Compensator knobs tailored for 7.62 x 51mm Match ammo.

The replacement stock is a Hogue overmoulded unit with full-length aluminium bedding rail.

The sound moderator is a Reflex T8.

The bipod is a Harris 6”- 9” swivelling benchrest model.

At the moment I’m content to break the barrel in and do initial testing with Prvi Partizan 168-grain match ammo, but I’ll reload eventually.

I’d love to show some bragging groups from my first range session, but:

1. I was breaking the barrel in.
2. I was trying to get a rough zero, and;
3. The wind was so powerful that it blew my target – and its wooden backer! – right off the mounts at the 100 yard backstop.

This review at Sniper Central suggests that it’s capable of sub-3/4 MOA groups. We shall see…

I picked this up from the excellent blokes at South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies.

A couple of VERY nice rifles you have there! Thanks for the specs... very sharp bit of kit.

Congrats! And do keep us posted on your progress at the range, please.

Congratulations!

I've heard a lot of horror stories about the tribulations of firearm ownership in the UK. :thumbdn: I hope you are able to fully capitalize on your patience and perseverence.

Congrats, I am glad you were willing to jump through all the governments hoops and I hope you enjoy them for a long time to come. I have always found it somewhat ironic that is a country that is so anal about firearms ownership they don't mind the suppressors (sound moderators). Here they cost me about triple the price and I have to pay a $200.00 tax stamp on top of that along with the paperwork headaches.

Beautiful rifles! Question on the sound suppressors... are they a requirement in the UK on rifles?

Suppressors are quite widely utilized in Europe as well. It is basically considered rude and impolite to shoot otherwise.

It is lost in our consciousness, but the main reason we have a US prohibition against suppressors is because of the poaching during the depression. It was generated as a reaction due to hunting law pressures.

It just got tossed into the mix with the other US firearm laws.

Otter- do you have to leave your rifle all safely locked up at your club or......?

Congrats on them fine rifles. I'm glad you made it through the tough regulations.
The Schmidt & Bender scopes are quite nice, I had the honor to handle a new Krieghoff Semprio in .300 Win with one earlier this year.(I have to admit that I paid more attention to the rifle than the scope :D)

Onya Max - Glad to see you've found a positive outlet after being press-ganged back to the big smoke.

No, but they are very easy to get authorisation for, even for target shooting.

No. The home security check we get is to verify that we have a steel security cabinet bolted to a wall to hold the rifles.

Back atcha, mate! Yes, it does make up - a little - for being away from the Eilean a’ Cheo.

"Ged tha mo cheann air liathadh,
Le deuchainnean is bron,
Is grian mo leth-cheud bliadhna
Air ciaradh fo na neoil;
Tha m' aigne air an lionadh
Le iarrtas tha ro mhor,
A dh'fhaicinn Eilean Sgiathach
Na siantanan 's a' cheo
."

(Although my head has greyed
With forgetfulness and sadness,
And the sun of my fifty years
Has darkened under the clouds;
My thoughts are filled
With a great desire,
To see the Isle of Skye
The elements and the mist).

Nice rifles mate.
I shoot a remmy 700 in .270 win, mine is a vintage and is a fine rifle.

Good to see you can still get your hands on something across the pond.

Ard Choille!

It’s a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308" Winchester.
The Boy Scouts used Remington 700 rifles where I was a 30.06 instructor. Never had a problem, a quality tool for sure.

We never used scopes though; our targets were metal silhouettes and the farthest was only 100 yards away.

Thanks for sharing. Very cool.

So why the ear muffs if you have the "sound moderator"?

As brother hwpaintballer says, "Not everyone has a mod fitted."

Especially the git with the 6mm-284 fitted with a muzzle brake. That beast sounds like the gates of Hell slamming shut. Even with Peltor Tactical electronic muffs on, I feel an actual pain in the sinuses when he fires.

Nice pieces. I like to see a blue rifle with good wood on it. Also like the cans very much.

With some work and a little luck you could get down to a one hole group.

Congratulations.

Additionally, silencers don't make guns hollywood silent (though a .22LR rifle outddors, with a can, is almost there).

Suppressors vary a lot in sound. The best suppressors are much quieter than the Hollywood sound effect.
