After 6 months' probationary membership at my rifle club.
After 8 weeks' bureaucracy and a security check at my home.
After spending far too much money:
...My Sako Finnfire Varmint in .22 Long Rifle!
She's a beauty from her Harris bipod to her SAK sound moderator; from her Leupold Vari-X III 4.5 - 14 x 50mm telescopic sight to her Doskocil rifle case.
My mate T. at the controls.
First target, first day, 100 yards. Considering that I was getting used to the trigger, experimenting with ammo, and that the wind was gusting to over 40mph, I'm very happy. Ammo was (mainly) Winchester yellow box.
She wants to shoot sub-minute of angle, and next time out I'm going to be of more help to her.
I'm a happy bunny and - if I can find a friendly farmer - I'm eventually going to make a lot of other bunnies unhappy!
Finnfire manual.
Finnfire tech specs.
Here’s my second new toy:
It’s a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .308" Winchester.
The ‘scope is an early Schmidt & Bender Police Marksman II in 3-12 x 50mm
It has a Mil-Dot reticle (and additional ranging stadia lines in “Minute of Osama bin Laden”
in 28 Minute of Angle Accuracy International mounts.
The base is a one-piece Warne Picatinny unit.
The ‘scope was built in 1998 for Accuracy International, and is fitted with Bullet Drop Compensator knobs tailored for 7.62 x 51mm Match ammo.
The replacement stock is a Hogue overmoulded unit with full-length aluminium bedding rail.
The sound moderator is a Reflex T8.
The bipod is a Harris 6”- 9” swivelling benchrest model.
At the moment I’m content to break the barrel in and do initial testing with Prvi Partizan 168-grain match ammo, but I’ll reload eventually.
I’d love to show some bragging groups from my first range session, but:
1. I was breaking the barrel in.
2. I was trying to get a rough zero, and;
3. The wind was so powerful that it blew my target – and its wooden backer! – right off the mounts at the 100 yard backstop.
This review at Sniper Central suggests that it’s capable of sub-3/4 MOA groups. We shall see…
I picked this up from the excellent blokes at South Yorkshire Shooting Supplies.
