My very first knife in progress

Hey guys, I've been lurking around here for many years and trying to absorb as much knowledge as possible. Over the years I have gathered a few tools and pieces of equipment, and decided I'd try to break em out and grind something out today.

Steel is very thin O-1 tool steel. 3/32 x 1. I had originally planned on using it for a slipjoint. I'm concerned about warpage....

The grinds on this are kinda funky, but they are even. I'm gonna work on it more.

Planning on using a nice piece of stabilized box elder burl, and stainless corbys. I think that would be nice.

Anyway, here she is. What do you guys think?

That's your first shot at grinding a blade? Looks like a good job to me, what did you use?

I like the blade design, though for me, the butt's a little too pointy. Looking forward to following your progress.

I agree about the butt being pointy. I really like the blade shape, though. It looks like a solid cutter.

I am gonna round that off a bit.... it is a bit pointy. Shouldn't take a second.

Thanks guys for the responses. I'm gonna try to finish this one up asap. More pics to come! :D

before you finish it up, draw out where the scales will be on the tang. Then reposition your pin holes. It won't hurt anything to keep the holes you now have, but they are positioned poorly for the handle,(except maybe the thong hole.) Keep the thong hole, move the front pin rearward probably, depending on your handle design, and move the center pin to the CENTER exactly in the middle of the thong and front pin. No matter how nice the knife is, if the pin position is not right it will show immediately.
I would comment on you breaking the spine with your grind line, but I'm sure you already know about that, just try not to do it again on the next one.
The butt is a bit pointy, but if you round it off more your thong hole positioning will be too far rearward. I'd leave it alone for that reason, or slot the thong hole forward ...

I had drawn the scales and pin positions on the blade, but things kinda shifted and changed as I ground the profile out a bit more. I'd like to leave a pretty thin ricasso area on this one. To me, it's more pleasing to the eye. I didnt go for anything really precise here, no layouts, measurements or anything. Just winged it all by eye. Just going by what looks good to me.

I'm sure on the next few I'll be a bit more careful. I'm just having alot of fun.

Here's an idea of what i want to do with the handle scales. It's not completely rounded off. I'm going for something kind of angular.

As far as the butt goes, I'm just going to touch it to the grinder to get that point off there. Nothing too radical.
