Hey there, if you read my other thread you know that I am new, and am currently looking to get into the knife game. While I make up my mind of what quality knife to get first, I figured I would show you what I do have, most of which is pretty silly.

First off we got this guy, which I got at a garage sale a few years ago for ten bucks. It stands up on its own which is pretty cool. Its 7”

If you hold it by the pommel and shake it you can hear all the pieces clinking together. Quality stuff here. Looks good on top of the tv though.

I’m not sure if there would be any actual benefit to having a blade this shape, but combined with the handle and the way that it fits into the hand. it really feels like its for going up under the ribcage and into the heart.

It has foam on the inside of the sheath haha

Next up is this nine incher that I’m pretty sure I got at a renaissance festival or comic convention or someplace geeky like that when I was in my early to mid teens (about a decade ago, please keep that in mind before you judge haha)

I definitely wouldn’t get it today, but once you get the sheath off its actually quite a handsome blade in my opinion, if you can embrace the cheesiness of it.

CHEEESE

It is actually surprisingly solid feeling for a 30$ fantasy knife aimed at 14 year old boys.

Then we’ve got this ridiculous thing, which just SCREAMS edc lol! It’s even got a clip and everything! I’ll be damned if its point up or point down though haha. This one I’m sure I got at a comic convention, I think at the same time I got the one above.

This one I would still buy today, just because it was only like fifteen bucks or something and it’s so totally absurd

Then to end things, the only serious edge I’ve got, the 18” machete. My great uncle got this in Guatemala sometime in the 50s I think (and I believe he smuggled it out).

As you can see, this thing has NOT been babied, and the edge has seen some better days. I’d like to sharpen it up, but I’m not sure what I would use except for a hand file. I know that’s how my dad kept it sharp when he had it (Its kind of been passed around within my family)

Here’s the label. Does it mean anything to anyone?

And a group shot

Well that’s my collection as of right now, as you can see its very choice :P. I’m going to get a nice BM soon and start my “real” collection, but in the meantime I figured you guys would find these amusing. On a more serious note, what do you think of the machete?

Ya gotta start somewhere. The machete is cool looking and sounds like it has some history with it.

The machete looks quite serviceable. As for the rest, well we know that you have a good sense of humor. ;)

I do confess that I like that triple edge job. If only Spyderco made it.

Cool... fact is that you dig 'em, that's what matters.

The priciest knives that don't make you happy are worse than the cheapest ones that do.

Very well said gentlemen!

I foresee you going in a couple of directions, if not both, you're going to get into very utilitarian knives (the machete hints towards this)... the path which many take, including myself... or you're going to get into very ornate knives... In either case, you're going to have a lot of fun and many nice knives... Oh and if you get into the custom side of things... we'll yeah, you'll end up broke like the rest of us lol... but in a good way =D

Anyways that machete is definitely serviceable. If you're not willing to be patient and learn to do it yourself (which you will, it's just a mater of time) there are a few people here that can do it for you... just poke around some you'll run into them...

In any case welcome to the commune I hope you enjoy your stay!

We all have to start somewhere. I also started with china made knives for mostly novelty and i think i even have a 3 blade knife similar somewhere buried in my closet. I then found Bladeforums....

And nice to see the machete getting some action :D

Yes, I agree the Tri-Edge () folder is sweet, but instead of Spyderco, made by Emerson with wave hooks on each blade... Triple threat baby! :D

I'm loving that machete Jup!

Welcome to the forum.

I had one of those triple blade knives. I gave it to a friend of mine and he thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Sometimes Chinese knives can be fun to mess around with and mod. I would take that 3 blade knife and mount it to a power drill and call it...~lightening strike~ "THE DRILLDO OF DOOM".

Yikes! :D

The Collins machete is sweet. If you plan on using it...fix that edge! If not for sentimental value (which is cool), go out and get yourself a 14 inch Tram machete. Great knife, cheap, and a whole lotta fun.

The get yourself a nice slipjoint pocket knife...like a Case Stockman....and whatever BM you like.

Then you will be set. You'll never have to buy another knife again!

On knives that you are actually going to use, you might as well break down and buy the Sebenza, Strider, Onion or whatever floats your boat. I learned that here from some guy who was looking at his collection of Home Shopping Network junk and then had the realization "I could've had a Sebenza" LOL

In terms of wall hangings however, does it really make any difference? If their only function is declaration, then maybe they don't need some super steel and elaborate heat treatment. If they look cool maybe they've fulfilled their function. If the majority of your guests are knife aficionados, please ignore the statements altogether.

Cool machete and sheath. For sharpening information check out the sharpening section.:)

Thanks for the pictures and stories with each

So.....did you actually carry 3 bladed knife? I have to admit, I'm wondering how that would ride in a pocket.......

I always wonder if some dude working away in a factory in China making that kind of stuff has ever thought to himself, "Why do we make this crap?"

Thanks for sharing. Always fun to see those good ol fantasy knives. That machete looks like a good one. I'd use it :). I look forward to see how much you enjoy a real pocket knife. A benchmade or spyderco would be a nice place to start. If you want to start you collection out with something a little more classic, come check out the traditional knife forum. You won't regret it :)

That Guatemala Collins will be somewhat coveted by quite a few members of this forum. I have two of those...one a 22" and the other a 24". The 22" is stamped with the Collins logo. The 24" has no markings but had that sticker (from what I can remember from when I was a kid). That is a very nice item indeed. They don't make those anymore and they were always one of the best machete makers in the business. And yes, all you need to keep it sharp is a file!
