My very unsexy EDC…

Well, she ain’t made of super-duper-hella-mega steel, she doesn’t have any fancy carbon fibre or micarta scales, no tacticool jimping or choils, no adjustable pivot to fine-tune her deployment, no decorative embellishments of any kind, and she sure isn’t my most expensive folder… but I just wouldn’t feel right without her. And whatever else I’m carrying on any given day, she’s in my left front pocket.

I’m talking about my Victorinox Tinker.

I had her out today for a little pocket lint defrag, and I was thinking that it would be cool to have a modern take on the traditional SAK--little tweaks here and there that might merge classic function with modern design. In short, I’m interested in a hybrid. I’m picturing a slip-joint similar to the size of the Tinker that has a small finger-choil on a main blade made of ‘premium’ steel, fine jimping along the spine, a small assortment of the most used tools (Philips and flathead drivers, cap-lifter, awl) and perhaps a pocket clip similar to a pen or perhaps the CRK Mnandi. I’ve tried getting my Spyderco Sage 1 to breed with my Vic Tinker, but it just ain’t happening.

It doesn’t look like Victorinox will be offering a ‘luxury’ line any time soon, and I just though that if such a creature already exists, someone on BladeForums would have one or may know where to get one. I have a lot of respect for the makers out there, but many don’t seem to like deviating from established patterns other than offer choice of steel or scale materials. I do realise that slip-joints are some of the most expensive and tricky knives to make from a completely custom design…

Please post up if you have any suggestions or thoughts!

Thanks! :)

G Sakai has some SAK style knives with ZDP-189 blades. No finger choils or "tactical" ergonomics, though. There are also people that will make you a damascus blade for your Victorinox.

I've heard of the custom damascus blade mods, and I've seen some of the Sakai offerings that look more like waiter tools... Both nice, but neither really approaches what I have in mind.

Thanks for the ideas!

I'd like to see this Ti-framelock....

It looks like contacting a knifemaker might be your best option. There are plenty of people who could mod a SAK by adding a clip and new blade.

thanks go to NaturalMystic,hanes, respectively

this last grouping is an N690 blade with Ti framelock and G10 scale, pretty awesome if you ask me

these were all in the customized production knives thread, and apparently Hanes is a beast when it comes to modding sak's

Nice. I remember when Scibeer was making those modded Farmers with scissors. I really wanted one of those, but these are spectacular.

I think NaturalMystic did it himself. Im sure you can send him an email or post something to his wall about it.

Thanks but I can't take credit for that. Scibeer made the HA III scaled Farmer with scissors for me. The HA III scales were a limited run that he and FelineVet did a few years ago. I understand that Scibeer retired from modding a while back though.

You had me up to finger choil and jimping. I can understand the jimping, though I personally hate jimping, but why the finger choil?

My daily carry is a 50th anniversary SAK Soldier. I haven't sharpened it in a couple weeks and last night I did some wood carving with it. Still cleanly slices paper. I'm beginning to wonder that the latest super steels are just marketing hype.

Beautiful SAK mods, fer sher! I particularly like the two above...

I reckon the choil I have in mind is something fairly subtle. Think of it more as a slightly angled or rounded ricasso with contoured bolster. I don't really need a locking blade but I find it's nice to have the little extra margin of safety that a slippie choil offers--and you can get a four fingered grip on a smaller handle. Imagine a double-stack Spyderco Kiwi 3 with a couple of light-use tools offered with the Kiwi 1 scale materials. As for the jimping, it would have to be very fine or even substituted with some filework...
