My Vex has rusted!

I use my Vex quite often as a kitchen knife just to get some good use out of it. It slices the S out of meat and veggies and anything else. I washed it last night and placed it in the drain board. This evening it was stained and had surface rust all over it. I couldn't believe it. I hit it with a scotch brite pad to remove the rust and then smeared it with a thin coat of mineral oil before putting it away. I couldn't believe how quickly SR101 begins to rust!!!
 
Yes, my Rat Hunter has a few rust spots on each side. SR101 seems to start rusting pretty fast, have to keep up on it.
 
Yep, the Vex is D2.

D2 is considered to be nearly stainless steel. But there's a reason why they call it stainless, not stainnever.

You can stain it. You can discolor it. You still have to maintain it. I stained my Vex with the first thing I ever cut with it (ribeye steak). It happens. :thumbup:
 
Yeah, mine has a patina on it from using it on a hike/picnic and not washing/drying it right away. Now it's really mine!
 
Mine has naturally patina'ed from cutting lots of acidic fruits, but I haven't seen any outright rust. Now my M9LE.... I forgot to keep up with the tuff cloth on that one, and it's got some all-out rust spots :(
 
I've had INFI rust on me. Not bad, but rust all the same.

I have a new carbon-steel Moore Maker folder. I gotta get some Ren-Wax on that blade. Too shiny to not take care of.

I just don't see it. My Vex is THE worst knife I have with regards to rust. I haven't cut anything with mine besides paper and it has surface rusted twice. Not just a discoloration like on several of my carbon and tool steel blades after hard use without prompt cleaning, but actual brown rust.

Maybe its an issue with the climate you live in being from the south. Mine rusted from physical contact with water, but my second Vex has yet to rust just sitting in the sheath unused.
