Just wanted to let everyone know that my web hosting provider here in Germany apparently ceased operations last Tuesday, 5th of Feb., leaving me without either of my websites or my regular email.

Unfortunatley there was also nobody left in the company to handle anything or authorize domain transfers. That makes it slightly difficult to regain control of the domains.

In the meantime I have regained control of wilkins.de – which is now hosted by another provider! – reinstalled my design weebsite there and my normal email is once again working too.

If all goes well, I will have wilkins-knives.com running under a new hosting provider in a day or two. Bad news is that my entire website was lost as I have no access to any of my files or back ups. I will have to redo the site. At least I have all the photos. My blog on Google is still running (thank you Google!) http://wilkins-knives.blogspot.de/ and I am trying to keep customers and other interested parties informed there.

Obviously this has been a giant disaster. My business depends on my website and having that disappear without warning or explanation was (is) a major drag. I'm sorry to all who were concerned, other than the website fiasco, everything is business as usual.

I do suggest to anyone using a CMS with a databank to be damn sure to back up all your stull OFFLINE as well as online. I have learned that lesson the hard way.

I have regained control of my domain wilkins-knives.com and it is back online with a new provider. I will have a new website up asap.

In the meantime I hope to have a temperary stocklist up this weekend.

My email is all back o normal, if you'd like to purchase a knife you saw in stock before the crash, shoot me an email.

Thanks for everyone's patience!

I'm glad you got things under your control again Kevin. There can be a lot of unexpected glitches and longterm problems associated with domain name registration and host changes.

Thanks! It continues to be a major drain on resources. There were hundreds if not more people taken down by the one hosting provider. So at least the folks at DENIC and COREnic were able to change gears and get name servers and whatever changed. The old hosting company had been in business for years. One client of mine had like 40 domains hosted there and at least one other knifemaker in Germany went offline too.

The main thing is that nobody has been in the company to manage an orderly shut down. It cant be that they didnt see this coming. I do believe some customers will try and take legal action. I'm just glad to be back online.

Of course this has killed sales. No website = no sales. Plus I need to be in the workshop making stuff, not spending days working on copy and getting pics together so my website guru can get the cms system and new databank configured. It is very frustrating...

Dang!! That happened to me when Apple stopped hosting websites, but that was my fault for not noticing that they weren't going to be hosting website. LOL. Glad you are back up and running.

It do suck Joe. Just spent 2 hours trying to set permissions on a mySQL databank with little or know real knowlege of how to do that... I did not get no permissions. Guess I will be on the hotline in the morning crying...

Just wanted to closeout this thread and let everybody know that my website is back up and running! It took a while and a lot of work. Right now there are about 200 pics on the site and I'm still adding the last of the products to the in stock page, and tweaking the copy. Thanks for everyone's support during the outage. What a drag. If you're using a CMS system on your site – like Wordpress or similar – be sure and do an offline backup of your entire site and Databank. I never expected my hosting firm to go bust, but they did.

We now return you to our regularly scheduled programing...

Appreciated! I wasn't expecting a company with whom I've done business for a good 10 years to tank on me without so much as a warning. I already have the new site backed up on my home computer! Lesson learned!!

That is poor form indeed, some sort of notice would have been appropriate. On another note, are you going to be making any new Ghost Dog folders soon? :D

I'm sure I'll make some Ghost Dog folders again. When I have any dates and times they'll be posted on my news blog!
