....but I did manage to make it seemingly structurally sound:

I'd been wanting to make one for a long time as the one's I found for sale weren't quite what I wanted.

I happened upon some free 3" and 2.5" fire sprinkler pipe, so all it cost me was $11.00 for the 12"x12"x0.25" plate and I borrowed a flux core mig welder from someone we work with.

Need to order some knobs for the bolts, or find them locally, though as usin a wrench is for the birds.

Not pretty...but it helped a lot this last weekend.

Looks good with the paint job. Your welding is 37% better than mine.

Looks good! Take some rod and weld across the nuts. Bingo. Instant tool free handle!

EDIT: LoL, just saw Medivans and I posted at the same time...

What is 37% better than crap again? :p

WaterC, dril a hole in the bolt near the top, put either a small rod in there (hammered at both ends) or another bolt with 2 nuts so it wont unscrew itself. THa will give you a makeshift handle. Actually that's how mine is setup permanently.

Wait!.... I think you should make a t-bolt out of the...... oh, nevermind... :p

A good knife vice is definitely on my list, right now I am using two blocks of wood like the ones you have, I pinch them in the pipe jaws of my swivel/rotating vice...kind of a pain

what type of welder are you using? if its a wire feed try bumping up your amperage a little, looks like your not getting good penetration, and switch over to Lincoln wire, after I did that 90% of the splatter went away

The blue paint looks good

Thanks for the handle advice guys. :)

My dad, who is a great welder....offered some advice.

"Mix some JB Weld and cover that shit up!"

Such a sweet father. :)

Gasless MIG is always a bit tricky, I find the flux vapors often obscure the puddle. The paint job looks awesome!

and check the polarity it's on.

The flux core polarity and the MIG polarity are opposite; and it's not always changed when the wire gets changed.
DCEN is what you want for fluxcore

I've become a much better gasless welder over the last year. I've found that the biggest improvement occurred when a friend told me to weld little circles. Or, as 1234567890's link read in the last paragraph, cursive letter "e".
