My wife got me hooked on hawkbills

My wife is not much of a knife person, but she has been carrying a plain edge Merlin since they were made out of ats-55 and had no Boyle detent. She will not even consider a different knife, although she did pick up an Endura3 for some slicing tasks. She carries the Endura in her purse and the Merlin on her waistband. I have never been much of a hawkbill fan as I did not think they have much utility value. This last wendesday we got into a local store about 10 minutes before they closed. I was looking at knives and planning to pick up a plain edge p-mil, they didn't have any plain edge in stock so I was looking around. She looked at the Superhawk and like it but said it was too heavy for her and I should get it. I liked the compression lock and the carbon fiber, but was a little unsure of the blade shape. I carry my 52100 Mule on my belt anyway so I figured what the hell I can try something new. So I bought it, and there were several cutting chores over the last couple of days and I really like it. It is much more versatile than I ever thought. I am hooked; the Superhawk and the mule can handle any cutting chore I can throw at them easily, and complement each other perfectly. I am really liking using this knife, and my eyes are open to the many uses of the blade shape.

I agree. I've been putting off getting the Para mostly because I like the Military so much, I can't see it adding very much. Then you compare the specs of the Superhawk and the Para, they're almost the same size, same lock, different handle shape but I wanted to support the forum knife so I got the Superhawk. The first time you have to cut some string the hawkbill shines. It just grabs it and cuts, all you have to do is get the blade in there and pull. Some people don't like the subtle curve of the Superhawk, but I find that makes it more useful for slicing fruit. It really is a versatile design.

I love my Hawkbill knives.
It always annoys me when Im reading or watching a knife review and they say the only thing a hawkbill is good for is self-defense. You don't really get the full use of a Hawkbill until you use it.

Most true! I love my hawkies and pretty much ALWAYS have either a SE Tasman or my SE Harpy on me. They are not my primary EDC, but always get the nod for the really nasty, tough cutting chores that might come up like breaking down boxes, pruning and other yard work, etc. I also carry my little CLB Boker Subclaw quite often and find that baby hawkbill to be supremely useful as well.

Anyway, welcome to the cult...er...um...club. :D

Really I will admit I was one of those who thought they were only good defensively. I was so wrong I have used this so many more times than I ever thought I would. Yesterday we had a huge delivery at work and it does everything great except cut on a cutting board, but thats what my 52100 Mule is for. I had to touch it up on the sharpmaker yesterday and it is very easy to sharpen with the corners.

They are a great blade shape! (and that's coming from the guy who was a dagger fiend :D)
My first Spyderco was the Karambit, then a Tasman Salt. Spyderco got my hooked on the hawkbill and now all I'll buy from Spyderco are hawkbills! However, I'll make exceptions for the Endura4 Wave and new Manix...and maybe the new Police...:D

I'm into the Spyderco hawkbills as well. I just picked up one of the discontinued FRN Merlin models.

I've had an interest in them as well. I was fortunate to come a cross a NIB g-10 harpy recently. :D

I've always liked the hawkbill shape also. Its not as practical but it appealed to me from the first Fury knife my brother gave me cheap as it was, to the Tasman from Spyderco to the latest in my collection, that being the BlackHawk Garra.
