because I saw an advertisement in a magazine and thought "hmmm those tins look useful". My wife saw the tins drying and looked at me real funny. I said I was interested in the tins, not what was inside. She asked me what I wanted them for. I replied a pocket fire kit, pocket fishing kit etc. I got this in response  She does understand somewhat, but at the same time I get ... :D
The bonus is that the three tins came in a larger tin that would make a suitable water container/cup/water boiler. I just had to share with people that understand so I can feel "normal"! Here's a pic. -Matt-

Nope. You ain't nuts.

I just acquired a couple dozen 1 pint and 1 quart clear paint containers with lids. They're PET plastic so they aren't fit to eat or drink from but they'll work well as air tight containers for gear.

In a pinch they could be used but with the current scare about Bisphenol-A, I've decided against using them for food storage.

I'll post some pics after the weekend as they're at work. Who knows I might have to give some away so stay tuned.

You're not nuts: I'm trying to make a stove kit around one of the Heineken minikegs.

Dammit, I messed up another one - I mean, off to the beer store !

Just wish I liked Heineken a bit more but we all have to make sacrifices :D

My wife has pretty well given up on saying those three little words: "whatcha up to?"

That's a crazy good idea, but seriously I get that look a lot. I just finished making a car kit in an ice chest. It was big enough to held everything I needed and the container will keep my beer frosty in case of emergency.

I use those dip cans for tinder kits, if you ask around you can probly get a bunch of them for free,

Guys that chew normally have a couple old ones kicking around,

I got the tinder kit idea from My buddy Normark, it was a project he did with the scouts. steel wool, fatwood and soaked cotton balls

I made a bunch up for my last hunt with my father in-law and brother in-law .
I also add a little dyer lint in too.

Good little containers , I am going to use one for a pocket fishing kit,

Cool ass score. My wife thinks I'm nuts too. She calls me a "hillbilly sucker."

Oh well.

You know, you can get shredded beef jerky in the exact same containers. Good stuff, if you buy the right brand, and probably a little cheaper.

I am planning on a snuff can fire kit. I will get a snuff can belt holder to wear with my belt knife. My compass, pocket knife, and whistle can go in my pockets. All I want is cotton balls, small lighter, and a small ferro rod.

Altoids makes some round tins for fruit flavoured mints or something, they are pretty good. Also, the little metal tins zippos come in are a great size as well.

It's good to know that I'm not alone getting the  look from the wife once in a while! She is pretty cool about my hobbies and interestst though. (She still doesn't know about the fatwood fire I started on the back of one of the dinner plates!:D)

Lots of good info so far...any other cool ideas on empty container useage? I really like that keg/stove conversion idea I never would have thought of that on my own! -Matt-

I bought some candy in a similar tin this weekend. Good candy, and a nice tin for me. :)

I should get myself a few little tins and make a fire kit, I'm making do with an old vitamin bottle stuffed with cotton balls slathered in petroleum jelly at the moment.

It is normal.I take every tin container that comes in my reach, and paid some 25$ for stainless surgical needle container. And told my son to buy me some of those tin cases with Bob Marley or so."Are you smoking pot?"he asked. And I steal cotton from my wife, and buy mini Bic each time I go to grocery store, and wife always says she can't stand sound of knife at stone anymore,etc,etc...No you are not nuts.

I guess there are other people crazy like me after all. I've been getting those strange looks for years. Guess the sheeples will never come around.
