but it has to be a small fixed blade she can keep in her purse, she doesn't want to break a nail opening a folder. I don't know where to begin, never searched for this type of blade. Came across a Buck/Mayo Kaala in S30V, OAL 6''. Seems like a good place to start. Any suggestions?

Two days ago I ordered this lovely mini Tanto from Kiku:

A Spyderco Kiwi may not be a fixed blade model but this elegant compact folder is easy to open without chipping a nail thanks to the handy hole in the blade. I love mine and women tend to like it as well, as it's almost "cute":

Gee excranium, What did you do to piss her off? :-)

I heartily second Dagons advice for a Spyderco folder (big hole to open and fits in a carry bag easily).
But for God's sake, get her something little, it shortens the recovery time!

Benchmade mini grip. It's not a fixed blade, but with the thumbstuds (or ''spyder hole"), she won't have to worry about breaking a nail. They come in pink too. I just bought my wife one, and she loves it. At least that's what she tells me. The steel's pretty good too, 154 CM. _

I don't know if I'd be crazy about a fixed blade for in a purse, unless it's sheathed, get her an assisted opening folding knife, she'll be hooked for sure.

+1 for the Benchmade mini-Grip. I esp. like the 556, as at that size the studs make for effortless opening. The Axis lock also closes w/out having to put your fingers in the blade path, and is lightning smooth.

I agree, go with a folder. Much safer in a purse.
How about a Leek or a smaller Scallion? Good price and lost of colors to choose from. The Leek is a frame lock and probably easier to close than the Scallion or Chive. For a flipper or manual opener, any Spyderco will do but they aren't very "Lady Like"

Let me throw this one out: Browing Ice Storm. On Sale for 30.00. http://www.cdnninvestments.com/browningknives.html used to be 75+ an worth it. SUPER easy to open, SMOOOOOTH action and a easy linerlock to close. Lightweight but with a 3" VG10 blade.

Or go with a very nice Mcusta in exotic wood. Basically the same knife jazzed up. http://www.japaneseknifedirect.com/MCUSTA.html while you are there look over the SEKI CUT pages. Lots of unique options and I think reasonable costs.

Great Suggestions. Those Japanese knives are beautiful. I hope she has not caught my knife disease, that could get expensive. The search goes on.

first i think i would check the knife laws in your state, a fixed blade in the purse may be considered concealed, making it illegal. where as a folder may not be.
small sebenza i would say, performs like a fixed blade anyway.

I'll second the scallion, nice inexpensive knife, not real big,but easy to handle,AO,I think she'd love it.

What is the purpose of this knife? What is its intended use?

Thanks,
Rich

What about one of the soon to be released Damascus Kershaw Chives? About $54, the steel is said to perform pretty well, though below S30V, it'll look incredible with the Damascus blade, and with the flipper + speed safe, she won't have to deal with thumbstuds breaking nails or hurting her fingers. Kershaw also has the greatest warranty in the business.
