My wifes friend was bit by a pygmy rattler

I have a close buddy that was bitten by a pygmy rattler while picking up his jeep doors after a night of snake research. He made an hour by hour diary. Went to a friend who was a doctor but did not get antivenom. The hand swelled up but there was no necrosis, and he said the discomfort was about that of a fire ant bite. I'm interested to read more about pygmy bites to see if they are as bad as their cousins. On another note, he just texted me an hour ago and caught three in the red phase!

cool.. they say you can live through most snake bites that occur in north america.. lucky guy..

My wife was bitten by a pygmy rattler. We were walking up my parents driveway about dusk, she was following me. Neither of us saw it before it hit her. I killed it and drove her to the nearest hospital, thirty miles away. You get prompt attention when you walk in the ER with a rattlesnake, even a little bitty pygmy rattler.

Antivenin for my dog was $800. Then add antibiotics and such and you're stuck with over $1000 in vet bills. I'm sure antivenin for a human would be much more.

I've seen an equal number of pygmy rattlesnakes and large rattlesnakes in SoCal. I didn't see the pygmies until I was right up on them, and I mean within inches.
They were coiled up tight and silent. Once I saw, of all things, a flashlight under a bush, and reached in to retrieve it. When I walked past the bush and looked on
the other side, there was a pygmy coiled up within inches of where I had picked up the flashlight.
