I wanted to give my wife something special for Christmas. I always tease her that the first words she ever said to me when we were just coworkers was after she brought fudge in for the crews. Never had "there's fudge over there if you want it" sounded so sweet. She has been making fudge with a cheap Wal-Mart spoon, so I decided she needed a nice one for Christmas.

The wood is walnut, which I understand isn't ideal, but it will work ok for how often she uses it. The wood is from the tree that stood over my childhood sandbox. My dad cut it down and had it sawn into boards about 20 years ago. It was completely hand carved and shaped except for the initial cutting out of the blank. I couldn't find my coping saw, so I used the band saw. Needless to say, I'm hooked on carving. I'm trying to collect some traditional tools little by little. Shown are the tools I used. Pride of place is my TC barlow. Good for pre shaping and knocking off of corners.

Next is a ladle and maybe a saute stirrer. But I think I'll try fresh maple this time instead of super hard and dry walnut. Haha.

That is a beautiful spoon. I'm sire your wife will love it. That is a wonderful piece of art, thanks for sharing it.

Green wood is the way to go, but that walnut spoon is beautiful!!

That came out great!

Beautiful work! With a wonderful story behind it. I hope it serves you well for many years.

That's a superb looking spoon. Carving is good fun. Especially with traditional pocket cutlery.

Outstanding!!! That's beautiful, what a great job and a very special thing to have made from that tree. I love walnut, it's one of my absolute favorite hardwoods. And using your Barlow in the making of it is cool too.

Man, that is just beautiful work, with you doing all the work, and where the Walnut came from....I bet you she will treasure that spoon-well done!

What a wonderful gift, and a great piece of work. You old romantic! ;)

Awesome work, medicevans, and with that much history it's bound to become a family heirloom.

Awesome spoon and an even sweeter story. That should melt her chocolate chips and get you a few brownie points for sure!

Gorgeous! The shape is very nice, and the grain is stunning! You really picked a nice piece of lumber!
