my work knife

Ask the manager where he got them and what the cost was. If it is a local shop, no shipping. Also see where if you have a local Grainger. If they don't have the item in the store, I do a "will call" pick up. They have it sent to their store and you go back and pick it up. No shipping. Just another trip to the store.

Another thing I do to keep down shipping costs is to order more than one knife. You could order your other knife that you had mentioned on another thread and also get something for work from the same store. This can lower the cost per knife shipping cost. I very rarely just order one knife.

Have you thought about getting an inexpensive kitchen knife and squaring the end off? You could even go to a thrift store and see if they have some used kitchen knives that you could modify.

Way too much deal spotting in this thread. I know you are trying to help each other out but we can't have links to non-paid dealer sites.

just out of curiosity, if this is supposed to be a place to help each other out how come we arent allowed to say or show where we got something for and what we paid for it?

Because it's deal spotting if you link to a non-paid dealer site. Have you read the FAQ? If not, I recommend you take a few minutes to do so. The posting rules are spelled out clearly. There is a link to the FAQ in my sig line.

The kitchen knife idea is good. Thrift stores in my area have useless hunks of metal but I have gotten many great kitchen knives at yard sales, YMMV.

My focus is old carbon steel knives, but I have seen plenty of newer, quality stainless also for a buck or two. If you get an old carbon steel knife and take care of it you can get it scary sharp which will make food prep actually kinda fun. Also, when people use it, they will think you are the emperor of sharpening. And an older knife might kinda look cool.

Still, if you get an Opinel you will have a choice of stainless or carbon (both steels are ideal for food prep), the knife will be a conversation piece, and it can be "blunted" with a coarse file.

I can get a #8 locally for about 10 bucks. Seen them at schmancy fancy mall stores for $16.

Duct tape and cardboard can make a good work sheath for whatever choice. Do ya have any neat stickers to slap all over it?
